At least 65 vehicles were involved in three separate chain reaction crashes on Interstate 94 in Van Buren County during white-out conditions today (Jan 16, 2016).

The crashes occurred between Waterviet and Hartford and caused the highway to be closed between M-140 at Watervliet and the M-51 exit near Decatur.

Our newsgathering partners at Fox 17 have learned,

The first crash happened on eastbound I-94 at exit 41 near Watervliet, involving nine vehicles and one semi-truck. Only minor injuries were reported.

Michigan State Police said because of that crash, traffic backed up and caused another accident involving approximately 44 vehicles and six semi trucks. They believe two people were killed.

Westbound I-94 near M-51 at exit 56 was shut down due to another crash involving about 12 vehicles. Minor injuries were reported.

I-94 will likely remain closed into the evening while the accident scenes are investigated. Traffic is being re-routed on to Red Arrow Highway.

The series of crashes came a year and a week later than the horrific 193 car pile-up along I-94 in Kalamazoo County.
