High School Baseball

Gull Lake beat Harper Creek 3-1 in a Division 2 baseball state quarterfinal Tuesday in front of a packed crowd at Nichols Field. Gull Lake junior first baseman Jarod Burton hit a 3-run homer in the 4th inning for the win. Gull Lake (30-9) advances to Thursday’s 11:30 a.m. state quarterfinal at Michigan State University, where they will take on Mt. Pleasant (30-8-1).

Lakeview beat the No. 5-ranked Saline Hornets 9-5 in a Division 1 state quarterfinal at U of M.   The Spartans took advantage of four Saline errors.   Lakeview will move on to play Gross Pointe South this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Michigan State University.

Olivet lost to Decatur at Hope College, 5-2 after winning the school’s first-ever regional championship.

Tigers

The Tigers and the White Sox will continue their series tonight in Chicago after yesterday's game was rained out.  A makeup date has not yet been announced for yesterday's game.  The Tigers lead over Cleveland is 2 1/2 games in the Central Division.  The Tigers and White Sox will send last night's starters to the mound tonight as Justin Verlander takes the hill for Detroit against Chicago's John Danks.   Broadcast time is 7:45 on WBCK-FM.

Ausmus not changing closers

Tiger closer Joe Nathan has struggled in his first season with Detroit.  He came into Monday with a 27.00 ERA over his last five outings (10 earned runs over 31/3 innings pitched).  But Manager Brad Ausmus says Nathan is still the team’s closer and he isn’t even considering another closer.

Bombers

The Bombers beat Rochester 3-1 over the Honkers in the first of a two-game series.  Justin Stawychny hit a two-run homer in the 7th for the win.  Those same two teams play tonight at C.O. Brown Stadium.

NBA Playoffs

Kawhi Leonard posted a career-high 29 points with four rebounds to help the Spurs take a 2-1 series lead.  The San Antonio Spurs used a scorching start and then held on to beat the Miami Heat 111-92 in Game Three of the NBA Finals last night.  San Antonio went off for 41 points in the first quarter and hit 19 of its first 21 shots on the way to a 21-point halftime lead.  Miami will also host Game Four on Thursday before the series heads back to San Antonio for Game Five on Sunday.

Michigan Open Golf

Three former Lakeview standouts made the two-day cut at the 97th Michigan PGA Open Golf Championship on Tuesday and advanced to today's and Thursday's final two rounds at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland Township. Matt Thompson, who is now a professional after an All-American career at the University of Michigan, is tied for 28th place Amateurs Landon Osborne, now at Western Kentucky University and Jared Multer of EMU also made the cut.

Bob Welch Dies

Hazel Park native and former Major League Baseball pitcher Bob Welch has died. Welch died of a heart attack Monday night. The 57-year-old played his college ball at Eastern Michigan University.  He spent ten seasons with the Dodgers and then was picked up by the Oakland A's, where he won the Cy Young Award for going 27-6 in 1990.  He was also part of two world championship teams, in 1981 with Los Angeles and in 1989 with Oakland.

NHL Playoffs

The Los Angeles Kings can close out the Stanley Cup Final with a win over the Rangers tonight in Game Four at Madison Square Garden. LA is seeking its second Cup in team history after also winning it all in 2012.

Girls’ Soccer

Gull Lake’s girls’ soccer team plays Grand Rapids Christian today in a State semi-final at East Kentwood. If Gull Lake wins, they’ll play for back-to-back state crowns next Saturday, at Williamston High.

Lions

The Detroit Lions started their mandatory three-day minicamp yesterday.  Following this week's drills, the team will be off until the start of training camp at the end of next month. Cornerback Chris Houston, Ziggy Ansah, and Joique Bell did not take part in practice yesterday as they all are dealing with injuries. Head Coach Jim Caldwell said he wasn't sure if Houston would be ready for training camp, but does expect Ansah and Bell to take part in camp.

The Sprint Cup heads to Michigan International Speedway for Sunday's Quicken Loans 400.

Battle Creek Coyotes Home Saturday

The Battle Creek Coyotes host the Miami County Blitz this Saturday at Harper Creek High School   Proceeds will go to help Dale Turpin, as the Coyotes continue their long-time mission to help out local individuals and families battling cancer.
