MLB Playoffs

The Orioles and Royals will try again tonight to play Game Three of the American League Championship Series after it was rained out last night at Kauffman Stadium. Former Oriole Jeremy Guthrie is slated to start for Kansas City, while Baltimore will send Wei-Yin Chen to the mound.  The Royals won the first two games in Baltimore.

The National League best-of-seven series is locked up at 1-1 with Game Three tonight in San Francisco.  John Lackey is scheduled to start for St. Louis, while San Francisco sends Tim Hudson to the mound.

Tigers

There will not be any changes made by Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski to the team's coaching staff. Dombrowski tells the "Detroit News" that manager Brad Ausmus and his assistants are under contract, and the club expects the entire staff to return in 2015.

Boys Soccer Districts

Battle Creek Central beat Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 2-1 in overtime in a Division 2 district game.  Ismael Bautista-Trejo scored two goals for the Bearcats.  Isaac Engelhardt made 20 saves in goal for the Bearcats.  They’ll play Plainwell on Wednesday at Middleville.

Harper Creek beat Wayland Union 1-0 in their Division 2 boys' soccer district opener.  Noah Eckert with the only goal of the game.   Jack Bohanon made six saves in goal.

Olivet beat Lake Odessa 1-0 in a Shootout.

Harper Creek plays Hastings on Wednesday in the district semifinal at Middleville.

The season ended Monday for some area soccer teams:

Otsego beat Pennfield 5-0.

Hastings 3, Gull Lake 2 in overtime.

Jackson Christian 4, Calhoun Christian 0.

Lansing Catholic 8, Maple Valley 0.

Tonight, the Lakeview Spartans host No. 1-ranked Okemos at 6 p.m.

Marshall plays Eaton Rapids.

NFL

The St. Louis Rams jumped out to an early two-touchdown lead but the San Francisco 49ers stormed back for a 31-17 victory on "Monday Night Football"  Colin Kaepernick threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns, one of which went 80 yards to Brandon Lloyd with just 14 seconds left in the first half.

Lions

The banged-up Lions host the Saints this Sunday.  Coach Jim Caldwell isn’t saying if Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush, or Theo Riddick will be available to play.   Rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy could be back at practice this week.   A core muscle injury derailed his NFL career.  Van Noy could see his first action in a month, if all goes well.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit Pistons guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is expected to miss the next three preseason games with a left knee strain. An MRI showed no structural damage.  The Pistons drafted Caldwell-Pope in the first round last year.  The Pistons play at Charlotte tomorrow night.   They’re 2-1 in pre-season so far.

Red Wings

The Red Wings will host the Bruins tomorrow.

College Football

#6 Michigan State beat plays at Indiana this Saturday….2pm on WBCK.

Indiana starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured left shoulder on Thursday.
The University of Michigan beat Penn State 18-13 and are off this week.

WMU is at Bowling Green.

D-Backs Replace Gibson

Chip Hale is the new skipper of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was introduced Monday as the replacement for Kirk Gibson, who was fired with three games left in the season.  The D'backs had the worst record in the majors this season at 64-and-98.
