The Battle Creek Bombers defeated the Lakeshore Chinooks 7-4 in game 2 to split the doubleheader and clinch a playoff spot.   It’s their first postseason appearance since their championship season in 2011.

Game 1 was a game suspended in Wisconsin on Wednesday night, tied at 5 in the 12th.   The Chinooks won it in the bottom of the 12th, when play resumed last night in Battle Creek.

In game two, the Bombers took a 3-0 lead in the second, but the Chinooks would tie it at 3 in the fifth inning. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Dean Miller n hit a two-run homer over the center field wall to give Battle Creek the 6-4 lead.  The Bombers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Tonight, the Bombers and Chinooks square off, and then the first-place Wisconsin Rapids Rafters come in for the final two home games of the regular season on Saturday and Sunday.

Tigers

The Tigers are 4 games behind Cleveland in the Central division and one-half game out of Wild Card contention going into tonight’s game in Texas. The Tigers were off Thursday  Anibal Sanchez will start against the Rangers’ Yu Darvish.   Broadcast time is 7:40 on WBCK.

Tiger Moves

Center fielder Cameron Maybin has been put on the disabled list with a thumb injury.  The Tigers have called up reliever Warwick Saupold from Toledo for just one game.  The 26 year old Australian is back at Toledo tonight, after Bruce Rondon returned from paternity leave.  Reliever Shane Green is battling a side muscle issue, but hopes to pitch through it. Farm hand Drew VerHagen had shoulder surgery on Monday.

LeBron Signs

LeBron James signed a HUGE new contract with the Cavaliers, and announced it yesterday on Twitter.  $100 million for three years.  It's the first time in his career that he's been the highest-paid active player in the NBA.

Olympics

Michael Phelps got his fourth gold medal in Rio yesterday, in the 200-meter individual medley.  He's now won the event in four straight Olympics, going back to 2004.

Simone Biles won the gold medal for America yesterday in the women's individual all-around, and Aly Raisman won the silver.

American swimmer Simone Manuel tied for the gold medal in the women's 100-meter freestyle last night, and became the first African-American woman ever to win a swimming gold in an individual event.

American swimmer Ryan Murphy won the gold medal yesterday in the men's 200-meter backstroke. He also got the gold in the 100-meter backstroke earlier in the week.

American Kayla Harrison won her second straight Olympic gold medal in judo yesterday.  She ripped through the whole field.  No one else got close to her.  Judo isn't like swimming . . . you get one event and one shot at a medal, like tennis.  Kayla won her division in 2012 and again yesterday, and she's the first American to win two golds in judo.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions have their preseason opener tonight at Heinz Field.
