Tigers

The Detroit Tigers return from the All-Star break Friday night starting with a seven-game home stand. They open up with the first of three versus the Orioles, followed by a four-game series against the Mariners. Anibal Sanchez gets the start on Friday followed by David Price and Justin Verlander. The rest of the rotation has not yet been set.  Manager Brad Ausmus and GM Dave Dombrowski might have some work to do to fill out the starting rotation for the second half of the season. Starters Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene have not been good for the last month or two.  The Tigers are at .500 --44-and-44 on the season--- and they’re nine games behind the Royals in the Central Division. But, they're only three-and-a-half games back of the Astros for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

Bombers

The Bombers lost to the Lacrosse Loggers 11-5 as they committed 5 fielding errors. Dre Gleason hit his first home run of the year, a 3-run shot in the second inning. Today is Thirsty Thursday presented by Labatt’s. $2 Labatt's all night at the park. The Bombers will take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks tonight and Friday. The Bombers host the Madison Mallards on Saturday and Sunday before the Northwoods’ League All-Star Break.

This Saturday, part of the ticket proceeds at the Bombers game will go to Miles for Memories. It’s a great way to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and see a baseball game!

Senior Open

James Dieters won the Michigan PGA Club Car Senior Open at Bedford Valley.  The 51-year-old Muskegon native takes home a $3,000 first-place check by shooting a 5-under-par 139, two-day total.  He pulled away down the stretch to beat out Randy Erskine and Brian Cairns by two strokes.

Golf

David Lingmerth is starting off the British Open from The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland scorching. He is seven-under through nine holes and in first place. Robert Streb is in second at minus-five through nine, while five golfers are tied for third earlier in the third major event of the season.  Jordan Spieth is set to tee off this morning and Tigers Woods has just teed off.

Wings Sign GR Center

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed Grand Rapids Griffins center Louis-Marc Aubry to a one-year contract worth $575,000. That leaves Tomas Jurco and Teemu Pulkkinen as the Red Wings' only other unsigned restricted free agents.

Average MLB Salary

The average major league baseball player makes $4.25-million a year - that's paid biweekly during the season.  That breaks down to $326,923 dollars per paycheck.  And they'll have $129,000 of federal taxes taken out - every two weeks!!  Some cities charge a 'jock tax' for money they earned while in their city.  So the players average three-game series costs them another $2,100---which the player ends up paying when they file their 'average' 26 tax returns - one for each tax jurisdiction.

-Wow - you almost feel bad for these guys.  Okay - not really.

Michigan-Nike

The University of Michigan is back with Nike. The Wolverines' apparel deal with the "Swoosh" was announced to be worth $169 million, starts on August 1, 2016, and runs through 2027, plus has a school option to go all the way to 2031. Michigan left Adidas to return to Nike.

MSU’s Dawson Signs with Clippers

Former Michigan State standout Branden Dawson has signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

Dawson, who averaged 12.8 points and 10.3 rebounds in four NBA summer league games in Orlando, will make the league minimum ($525,093) this year, according to the report. The first year of his deal is guaranteed. New Orleans drafted Dawson with the No. 56 overall pick in the second round, but the Clippers acquired him that night, paying more than $600,000 to the Pelicans for Dawson's rights.

Coyotes

The Battle Creek Coyotes are 5-3 overall, and 4-2 in the league.  They’re home this Saturday to take on the Motor City Jaguars at Harper Creek High School at 7:08 p.m. The game will benefit 8-year old Battle Creek native Maddux Hescock, who is battling cancer.
