The Tigers beat the Marlins 8-4 on Wednesday.  Catcher Bryan Holaday hit a grand slam home run to highlight a 6-run sixth.  Miguel Cabrera started at first base, and made some nice plays in the field in his first appearance in the field this spring.  Cabrera made a diving stop on a hard grounder by former teammate Don Kelly and threw from the ground for the out at first. Cabrera also fielded a bases-loaded grounder and threw home for a force-out.  Victor Martinez also played in the game and had a base hit.  It was  the first time that both of the Tigers’ top hitters played together this season.   Starter Alfredo Simon gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out four in four and two third innings, while Joe Nathan earned the win in a scoreless inning of relief.   The Tigers host the Orioles this afternoon inLakeland.

 

Red Wings

The Red Wings hostSan Josetonight.   Red Wings forward Erik Cole will miss at least the next three games with an upper body injury. Cole was injured in Tuesday's overtime loss toArizonaand according to general manager Ken Holland, he will be re-evaluated next week.  Defenseman Niklas Kronwall missed the game against the Coyotes because of a lower body injury and remains day-to-day.Hollandhad some better news about center Pavel Datsyuk, who has been out of the lineup for four straight games with a lower body injury.  He said Datsyuk could return to the ice against the Sharks tonight, depending on how he feels after this morning's skate. The Wings will play the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday at Joe Louis Arena before skating against the Islanders inNew YorkSunday.

NCAA Tournament 

Michigan State will face third-seeded Oklahoma in the Sweet 16 at Syracuse, New York.  Broadcast time is 9pm Friday night on WBCK.

The Sweet 16 gets underway tonight.  Top-seeded and undefeatedKentuckywill clash withWest Virginia.   Notre Dame takes on Wichita State, Arizona faces Xavier and Wisconsin meets North Carolina.   North Carolinabasketball coach Roy Williams said forward Kennedy Meeks has a sprained knee and might not be available for the Tar Heels. Wisconsinguard Traevon Jackson could return to action today.Jacksonwill be a game-time decision. The senior hasn't played since January 11th due to a broken foot.

On Friday, Gonzaga plays UCLA.Louisville faces NC State, Duke goes up against Utah, and Oklahoma meets Michigan State.

The Pistons play in Orlando on Friday.

Michigan Center Quits Due to Concussion Concerns

Former Michigan Wolverines center Jack Miller says he hung up his cleats last month due to concussion concerns.   Miller tells ESPN that he's not returning for his senior season because of the potential long-term impact from past and possible future concussions.   The 21-year-old claims to have suffered two-to-three concussions playing for Big Blue, but only reported one.   He was named the Wolverines' top lineman in 2014.   Miller played 22 games at U-of-M, including 16 starts.   His brother Matt was a highly-recruitedWisconsinoffensive lineman who retired after freshman preseason workouts due to the effects of multiple concussions in high school. Miller added he isn't sure if he would allow a future son to play the game.

High School Baseball

Pennfield 6, Lakeview 1.  Tanner Dean got the win in relief and went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Softball

Pennfield 38, Lakeview 13. Jessica Roan led the Panthers, going 4-for-6 with a solo home run, a double and three RBIs.

KCC Baseball

KCC beat Davenport College 15-2 in baseball. Travis Bolin went 2 for 4 with 2 triples...Seth Johnson 2-4 RBI.  Jake Lincoln pitching got his first college win.

Golf

After a four-week swing in Florida, the PGA Tour is set for its first of two straight events in Texas at the Valero Texas Open, in San Antonio.
