Pistons

The Pistons lost 109-101 in Brooklyn.   Brooklyn hit 16 of its 20 shots and never looked back.   Tobias Harris and Marcus Morris each scored 23 points, but center Andre Drummond had a season low 6 points and 6 rebounds and was benched early in the third quarter.  Detroit cut the lead to five with 1:34 remaining.   Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 15 points and Jon Leuer added 11 for the Pistons.   Brook Lopez had 34 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets.  The Pistons host Denver on Saturday.

Red Wings

The Red Wings lost third game in a row, a 4-3 overtime loss in Philadelphia. Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou both scored first period goals to put the Wings up 2-0. Henrik Zetterberg put Detroit ahead 3-2 in the third. But Philly tied it with 1:02 left in regulation and Jakub Voracek scored in overtime. The Red Wings last beat the Flyers in Philadelphia in the regular season on Jan. 25, 1997. Detroit did win the first two games of the 1997 Stanley Cup finals in Philadelphia on its way to sweeping the Flyers. The Wings host Winnipeg on Friday night in Detroit.

World Series

The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions for the first time since 1908 after beating the Indians, 8-7 in 10 innings at Cleveland. The Cubs started the scoring in the first on a Dexter Fowler homer.39 year old catcher David Ross hit a home run in his final game. The Cubs blew a 6-3 lead in the eighth as former Tiger Rajai Davis hit a two run homer.  After a rain delay, the game went into extra innings.

Ben Zobrist hit a tiebreaking, RBI double. Miguel Montero singled home the eventual deciding run. Ben Zobrist was named the MVP of the Series. Rajai Davis added an RBI single in the 10th before the Cubs became the seventh team to win the series after trailing three games to one.

Tiger Baseball

Now that the baseball season is over, the Tigers have a few days to make some big decisions.   They have three days to either pick up the options on closer Francisco Rodriguez and centerfielder Cameron Mabin.  Maybin would make 9 million next year; K-Rod would make 6 million, if the Tigers keep them.  Otherwise each can be sent on their way for a million or two each.   The Tigers also have five days to work out a deal with 22 free agents in their system, including utility man Eric Aybar and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

College Basketball

12th ranked Michigan State beat Saginaw Valley State 87-77 in an exhibition game     last night in East Lansing. The season opener is a week from tomorrow against Arizona in Honolulu.

 Thursday Night Football

The Atlanta play the Bucs at Tampa Bay tonight on Thursday Night Football.

 Lions Football

The Lions play at Minnesota this Sunday.  Vikings’ offensive coordinator Norv Turner resigned from the team on Wednesday.

 Big Ten Friday Night Football

Proponents of High School football are not happy to hear that the Big Ten will play six Friday night football games a year starting in 2017 and continuing through at least 2022.  The Conference says the games are being added as part of the conference's new television agreements with ESPN/ABC and Fox.  The Big Ten already has had Friday night games on Labor Day weekend, where High School programs have moved their schedules to Thursday in recent years.  Michigan and Penn State already have declined to host Friday night games on their campuses.

High School Football Playoffs

Three area teams made it through District Pre-Finals and play District Final games this weekend.  Undefeated Climax-Scotts (10-0) will take on 8-2 Mendon in Division 8.  The game is Friday at 7pm at Climax-Scotts.   WBCK will broadcast the game at 6:35pm.

Homer will host Concord on Friday night in a battle of 8-2 teams.   After Coldwater defeated Harper Creek to advance, the Cardinals (8-2) will go on the road to face Chelsea (10-0) in a Division 3 game on Friday.

 College Football

The 2-6 Spartans play at Illinois on Saturday. (10:30am on WBCK)

Number 2 Michigan will host Maryland on Saturday in Ann Arbor.  (2:30 on 104.9 the Edge)

Olivet College is 7-1 and 5-0 in the MIAA.  The Comets visit Adrian College this Saturday.

WMU Football

17th-ranked Western Michigan plays another Tuesday night game, at Kent State, on Election Day next week.
