MLB Playoffs

The San Francisco Giants are heading to the World Series after winning their third National League pennant in five years. Travis Ishikawa hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Giants past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 in Game Five of the NLCS in San Francisco.  Joe Panik hit a two-run blast in the third for the Giants and Michael Morse tied the game at three in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer.  San Francisco won titles in 2010 and 2012 and are seeking their eighth overall.  Game One of the Fall Classic between the Giants and AL champion Royals is Tuesday in Kansas City.

Thursday Night Football

Nick Folk's game-winning 58-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Chris Jones, and the Patriots held on to beat the Jets 27-25 at Gillette Stadium. Tom Brady completed 20-of-37 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns.  New England improved to 5-and-2 with its third straight win.  New York dropped its sixth game in-a-row to fall to 1-and-6 on the season.

Red Wings

The Red Wings will skate in Toronto tonight and then host the Leafs on Saturday night in a home-and-home series.  Forward Justin Abdelkader did not practice yesterday and head coach Mike Babcock said they would decide today if he'll be in the lineup against the Maple Leafs.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are in Orlando to play the Magic tonight.  After the game against Orlando the Pistons will play in Atlanta on Saturday, and then host the Philadelphia 76ers next Thursday to wrap up exhibition play.  Detroit starts the regular season against the Nuggets in Denver October 29th.

Lions

The New Orleans Saints head to the Motor City this Sunday to play the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.  The 3-4 Saints are rested coming off their bye week.  Detroit is 2-and-1 both home and away and is tied with Green Bay atop the NFC North.  Hear the game Sunday at noon on WBCK.

College Football

Michigan State travels to Bloomington tomorrow to take on Indiana in the battle for the Old Brass Spittoon.  The matchup marks head coach Mark Dantonio's 100th game at the helm of the Spartans, making him one of four coaches to reach the milestone in MSU history. #6 Michigan State has won its last 11 conference games and is 5-1 overall with a 2-0 record in Big Ten play.    Broadcast time is 2pm on WBCK.

The University of Michigan football team is in a bye week and will not take the field again until next weekend's contest against rival Michigan State in East Lansing.
WMU is at Bowling Green.

Slippery Rock at the Big House

Even though the Wolverines are off, football will still be played in Ann Arbor as Slippery Rock University and Mercyhurst take part in the Big House Battle tomorrow afternoon.

The game is the third for Slippery Rock at Michigan Stadium and commemorates the 35th anniversary of The Rock's first trip to the Big House.

Michigan has announced the Slippery Rock score at football games for decades, and the Wolverines first hosted the Division II school in September, 1979.

Boys Soccer Districts

The Marshall Redhawks beat Charlotte 4-2 to move into tomorrow’s District final.  Phil Delapas scored a three-goal hat trick, with one of the goals coming on a penalty kick.  Marshall takes on the host Mason team at 6pm Saturday.

Volleyball

KCC dropped to 5-17 on the season, losing to Grand Rapids Community College in three.

St. Philip 3, J-Christian 0.  Emily Schaub had seven aces, five kills, 21 assists and 10 digs.

Maple Valley 3, Bellevue 0.

Homer beat Grass Lake and Lumen Christi by 2-1 scores.
