MSU Wins Cotton Bowl

#7 MSU scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat #4 Baylor 42-41 in the Cotton Bowl. A blocked 43-yard field goal attempt with 1:05 left gave the Spartans a chance. The Spartans converted a critical 4th down with seconds left. Connor Cook’s 10-yard TD pass to Keith Mumphery with 17 seconds left completed the comeback effort.

The Spartan defense came up with two sacks and an interception to seal the win. Jeremy Langford ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans. Cook was 24-of-42 passing for 314 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

Third-ranked Oregon has advanced to the national championship game and ended Florida State's 29-game winning streak by scoring the last 35 points in a 59-20 rout of the second-ranked Seminoles at the Rose Bowl.

Fifth-ranked Ohio State is in the national championship game after Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-35 triumph over No. 1 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.  It’ll be Ohio State versus Oregon for the national championship on January 12th in Arlington,Texas.

Melvin Gordon ran for an Outback Bowl-record 251 yards and three touchdowns, and Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to give 17th-ranked Wisconsin a 34-31 victory over No. 19 Auburn.

No. 16 Missouri rolled to a 33-17 triumph over Minnesota in the Citrus Bowl.

Pistons

The Pistons wrap up a three-game road trip against the Knicks in New York tonight, going for their 4th straight win.

The Pistons host Sacramento on Sunday.

College Basketball

CMU hosts Central Pennsylvania College today.

U of M, 8-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, will tip off against Purdue on the road Saturday.

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin says the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers have asked permission to talk to him about their coaching vacancies. Austin has helped turn the Lions into one of the league's top defensive teams in his first season as their coordinator. He says he'll only interview next week if he can do so without compromising his current team's preparation for a playoff game.

Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are at Vancouver on Saturday night.  Detroit beat the Devils 3-1 on Christmas Eve.  Darren Helm scored twice for the Wings. Henrik Zetterberg had the other Detroit goal.

LeBron Out

Superstar LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers is expected to miss the next two weeks because of a strained left knee and back problem.  James has missed Cleveland's last two games. If the two-week estimate proves correct, it will be the longest stretch of games James has missed in his NBA career.

New Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh apparently wasted no time in getting key assistants in place, one day after his introduction. According to multiple reports, including the Los Angeles Times and FoxSports.com,Michigan's new offensive coordinator will be currentSouthern Californiaoffensive line coach Tim Drevno. San Francisco 49ers receivers coach John Morton will be coming as well, according to the Sacramento Bee.
