Tigers

Tigers starting pitcher Daniel Norris will undergo surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his thyroid. The 22-year-old, picked up by the Tigers in the David Price deal, said he was diagnosed earlier this year while with the Blue Jays. Norris was given the option to have surgery, but after a consultation with another doctor, it was determined he could wait until the end of the season to have the procedure. The Tigers say they were aware of his condition before they made the trade and expect Norris to make a full recovery and be ready for Spring Training.

USFL

An investment group looking to revive the old USFL is eyeing Grand Rapids as a possible franchise location. The league wants to start playing in the spring of 2017 with a 14-game season, but more money is needed to be raised before teams can be formed and play can begin. Other possible locations include Salt Lake City and Tulsa for the league's eight teams, which would be made up from players cut from the rosters of NFL teams.

The first champions of the 1980s version of the USFL were the Michigan Panthers, who shared the Pontiac Silverdome with the Detroit Lions.
