Sports: KCC Baseball splits; Must win Friday

The KCC Bruins baseball team lost to Lansing Community College 8-6 on Thursday in the National Junior College Tournament.  KCC came back to win against KVCC, 12-8.  The double-elimination tournament continues today at Bailey Park.   KCC plays Cuyahoga Community College at 3:30 at C.O. Brown Stadium.  The Bruins cannot afford another loss.   The tournament winner heads to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Oklahoma, which starts a week from Saturday.

Tigers Missing Two Big Bats

The Tigers play three at home this weekend against Texas and will be without the services of two of their top hitters.  Miguel Cabrera is expected to miss the weekend series with a strained side muscle.  Victor Martinez is off to be with his wife, who is having a baby.  Pitcher Buck Farmer was called up to take Martinez’s spot on the team. Daniel Norris starts tonight against the Rangers.  Hear it at 6:45 PM on 95.3 WBCK.

Ilitch is the Tigers’ Boss

Chris Ilitch is officially the new big boss at the Detroit Tigers.  The son of Mike Ilitch was unanimously approved as the new controlling owner of the team on Thursday, after a quarterly owners’ meeting.

World Hockey

Team USA lost to Finland 2-0 in the hockey world championship quarterfinals.  The Americans had won six in a row, but the loss ends hopes of winning the championship.  Red Wing’s goalie Jimmy Howard stopped 18 of 20 shots and was named U.S. player of the game.

NBA Playoffs

The Cleveland Cavaliers have won nine straight post season games.  They lead the best of seven Eastern Conference Finals 1-0.   Game 2 is in Boston tonight.

Golden State leads San Antonio two games to none in the Western Conference Finals.   Game three is Saturday night in San Antonio.

NBA All Star First Team Announced

LeBron James has been named to the NBA All-Star First Team.   LeBron is joined by Houston Rockets guard James, Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook, San Antonio’s Kawhi  Leonard and New Orleans’ Anthony Davis.

NHL Playoffs

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Predators 3-2 in overtime in Nashville.   The Ducks had blown a 2-0 lead late in the third quarter, but win it in the extra period. The series shifts to Anaheim on Saturday night.

Game four of the NHL’s Eastern Conference finals is tonight at Ottawa. The Senators have a two-games-to-one lead over the Penguins.

Griffins Play in San Jose

The Grand Rapids Griffins play at San Jose on Saturday night in the AHL Western Conference best of seven finals.  Game 2 is Sunday in San Jose, and game 2 is Wednesday May 24th in Grand Rapids.

Boy’s Lacrosse

Harper Creek beat Portage Central 11-2 on Thursday.

Lakeview beat Mattawan 11-10 in double overtime.

Pennfield 22, East Grand Rapids 2.


“Always Dreaming” is the early favorite in the 10-horse field for the Preakness as the Kentucky Derby winner goes for the second leg of the Triple Crown and a purse of 1.5 million dollars.


This weekend, NASCAR heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway.


Ricky Barnes and James Hahn are the leaders after a round of the Byron Nelson Classic near Dallas.
