The Lions beat the Vikings at Minnesota 14-7 on Sunday.    The Lions’ defense forced three turnovers and held the Vikings scoreless in the second half.   Anthony Zettel had two sacks, four hurries and a fumble recovery. Zettel, a native of West Branch, Michigan, was a sixth round pick in 2016 out of Penn State.  He already has four sacks and 18 quarterback pressures, and ranks among the top pass rushers in the NFL.

The Lions were able to turn two third quarter Minnesota fumbles into 11 points.  Matthew Stafford was 19 of 31f or 209 yards.  He was sacked six times, but did not throw an interception.  The Lions, at 3-1 are on top of the NFC Central and host the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.

Monday Night Football

The Chiefs host the Redskins tonight in Kansas City.

Tigers

The Tigers finished the season in Minnesota with a 5-1 loss to the playoff bound Twins.   44 year old Bartolo Colon pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning.   The only Tiger run came on a home run by outfielder Alex Presley who hit .314 on the season.  Jason Castro homered and drove in three runs for the Twins.  With the loss, the Tigers finish at 64-98, and 38 games behind first place Cleveland. And the Tigers will get the top draft pick in this summer’s draft.  The last time the Tigers had a top-five pick, it was after their 119 loss season in 2003, and they chose Justin Verlander with the #2 overall pick.

The Tigers’ Andrew Romine played all nine positions in Saturday’s game, giving Tiger fans something to smile about in the final weekend.

MLB

The Twins play the Yankees in New York this Tuesday in the AL Wild Card Game.  The winner will play the Indians in a best of five starting Thursday night.

The Rockies play the Diamondbacks in the National League Wild Card game on Wednesday in Arizona.    The winner will play the Dodgers on Friday night.

The Nationals and Cubs and Red Sox and Astros are the other matchups.

Red Wings

The Red Wings finished the pre-season at 3-4-1 and start he regular season at the new Little Caesar’s arena this Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.

College Football

Alabama is still #1 in the AP college football poll. Clemson was a distant second in the voting, followed by Oklahoma, Penn State, and Georgia.

Washington, Michigan, TCU, Wisconsin and Ohio State round out the top 10.

Michigan State will head to Ann Arbor this Saturday night, after beating Iowa 17-10 on Saturday. The Wolverines were idle.

Western Michigan plays Saturday afternoon at Buffalo after beating Ball State 55-3 on Saturday.

KCC Volleyball

The KCC Volleyball team split two games Saturday in Grand Rapids.

The Lady Bruins beat the Calvin College JV squad in a tough five-set match, in a come from behind win.   Earlier, the team lost in four to Oakland Community College.   The team is at 13-4 on the season.

NASCAR

Kyle Busch took the lead with two laps left to win Sunday's NASCAR Cup playoff race at Dover International Speedway.  Busch heads into the second round of NASCAR's playoffs along with 11 other drivers.  Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon, Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne were eliminated from the playoff field.

PGA

The USA has won the Presidents Cup for the seventh straight time.  After dominating the first three days, the Americans needed just one point on Sunday to win, and they picked up 4 ½.

Strader Passes Away

Former Red Wing’s Hockey broadcaster Dave Strader has died at age 62 after battling cancer for more than a year.

Pistons

The Pistons open the regular season at little Caesar’s Arena October 18th against Charlotte. Their first home exhibition game is also against the Hornets on Oct. 4.
