Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford will be the highest paid player in NFL history.  Sources tell the Associated Press that Matthew Stafford agreed to a $135 million, five-year extension with Detroit .  Stafford was entering the last year of his $53 million, three-year deal.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Stafford's deal is expected to guarantee him a record $92 million, including a $50 million signing bonus.

The 29-year-old Stafford is the Lions' franchise leader in almost every passing category  He hasn’t missed a game since the 2010 season.

Tigers      

The Tigers beat the Rockies in Colorado 4-3 on Monday night in the first of a three game series. Jordan Zimmerman improved to 8-11 as he scattered 9 hits over five innings, and kept the Rockies off the scoreboard, except for a 3-run second inning.  The bullpen came through for the Tigers, as five pitchers held a slim 1-one lead over the final four innings. The Tigers scored two in the first and two in the third.  Justin Upton doubled in Alex Presley and scored on a Nick Castellanos single in the first.  In the third, a Castellanos triple scored Upton and Miguel Cabrera.  Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 6th save.

The Tigers are at the Rockies tonight….8:15pm on 95.3 WBCK.  Michael Fulmer will start for Detroit.

Justin Verlander will pitch a Wednesday day game at 2:45 on 95.3 WBCK.   The Tigers host Cleveland this weekend, with a split doubleheader on Friday.

Jud Heathcote Dies at 90

MSU’s famed basketball coach, Jud Heathcote, has died at 90.   Heathcote coached Magic Johnson and led MSU to the 1979 NCAA championship.  Heathcote won 340 games, three Big Ten titles and appeared in nine NCAA tournaments during his 19-year career at Michigan State. He got his start as a head coach in college at Montana in 1971.

Spartans coach Tom Izzo was hired by Heathcote and was promoted to replace him when he retired in 1995.  Izzo says the basketball world is a sadder place because of his mentor's death, adding no one cared more about the welfare of the game than Heathcote.

College Football

Coach Jim Harbaugh won’t unveil his roster until Wednesday.   No. 11 Michigan kicks off the season against No. 17 Florida in Arlington, Texas on Saturday.  Harbaugh won't say who will start at quarterback.   It could be last years’ starter Wilton Speight or seldom-used senior John O'Korn.

Florida has had an eighth player suspended for Saturday’s game. Receiver James Robinson was cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession last week.  Seven Florida players are under indefinite suspension for misusing university funds.

High School Football

Week 2 of the High School Football season gets going on the radio this Thursday night, as Pennfield hosts Parma Western.

Lions

The Lions end the pre-season Thursday in Buffalo.  The regular season begins September 10th as they host the Arizona Cardinals.    The Lions have cut wide receiver Keshawn Martin and tight end Tim Wright. The moves give the two veterans an opportunity to possibly join another NFL team before rosters are set for Week 1.

KCC Volleyball

The KCC Volleyball team beat Jackson Community College in three on Monday to raise their record to 2-0.  Rose Tecumseh of Battle Creek had 9 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs.  Battle Creek’s Kim Kusler had 3 kills, 2 aces and 5 digs.
