Tigers
The Tigers tried everything they could think of to lose the game in Houston Sunday, and in the end they were successful at it, losing 6-5.   Jose Altuve hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth off Alex Wilson,  after Jake Marisnick tripled off losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny.  Miguel Cabrera homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Detroit.  The Tigers blew some excellent scoring chances in the game, but tied it in the 8th on a clutch single by Tyler Collins after J.D. Martinez had reached on an error. Starter Matt Boyd went 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, including two homers to Colby Rasmus.  Detroit is off today to travel to Chicago to play the Cubs.  Anabel Sanchez starts on Tuesday.    Broadcast time is 7:45 on WBCK.   The Cubs are one of the hotter teams in baseball, and currently hold the second wild card playoff spot by 3 ½ games.    The Cubs lost to the White Sox Sunday, breaking a 9-game win streak, but they’ve still won 15 of their past 17 games.  The Tigers are five games under .500, after losing 2 of 3 in Houston.

Calhoun County Amateur

Lakeview Grad Matt Garland won this weekend’s 38th annual Calhoun County Amateur Golf Championship at Binder Park Golf Course. Garland, who came up just short of winning in the last three Cal-Am tournaments finished with a 4-under-par 140 for the two day tournament.

Golf

Australia's Jason Day wins PGA Championship at Whistling Straits for first major title.  Day led wire-to-wire Sunday to close out a record-setting PGA Championship and capture his first major title.  The 27-year-old Australian finished at 20-under 268 to beat Jordan Spieth by three shots. Day is the first player to finish at 20 under in a major. Defending champion Rory McIlroy ended in 17th place at nine-under. Spieth overtook McIlroy for the top spot in the world rankings.

Women’s Amateur

17 year old Hannah O'Sullivan won the U.S. Women's Amateur on Sunday, beating Sierra Brooks 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final at Portland Golf Club..

Coyotes

The Battle Creek Coyotes season ended Saturday with a 16-14 playoff loss to the Michiana Thunderhawks.  The Coyotes nearly came back all the way from 10-0 deficit, faltering on a late drive with a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.

The season for the Coyotes (7-5 Overall, 6-4 MLFA) is now complete, except for the eight players representing the team in MLFA All Star Game in Marion, Indiana on Saturday, August 29.

Nascar

Matt Kenseth has won the Pure Michigan 400 Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.  Kevin Harvick ran out of fuel under green on Lap 114 but recovered to finish second. Martin Truex Jr. ran third. The Sprint Cup Series heads to Tennessee for the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday.

Lions

The Lions are practicing at Dearborn Edsel Ford High School today. Attendance is by invitation only. The Lions play their second preseason game on Thursday against the Washington Redskins at Fed Ex Field.

MSU Football

The Michigan State defense will be back in green jerseys after winning Saturday's closed scrimmage by a 30-14 count, according to a school release.The Spartans' tradition is for the winning unit to wear green jerseys -- as opposed to white -- in practice. Michigan State did not release a list of players who were held out, or did they release any scrimmage statistics or provide a scoring summary. The score of the game was derived from a modified scoring system.The Spartans open the season on September 4th at WMU, and then host Oregon the following week.  The Spartans will hold their first scrimmage of the season today inEast Lansing.

Pistons Work on Palace

The Pistons are undergoing renovations on the Palace of Auburn Hills. All of the seats are being replaced, and the floors are being refurbished as well. All of the seats from the lower-level suites down the to floor are expected to be new by the preseason. Detroit's first preseason game is on October 10th versus the Raptors at the Palace.
