The 3rd-ranked Michigan State Spartans play 2nd-ranked Alabama tonight in the Cotton Bowl. The winner will take on the winner of the Clemson-Oklahoma game in the National Championship January 11th. Broadcast time is 6pm tonight on WBCK.

Michigan Basketball

Michigan opened Big Ten play at Illinois with a 78-68 win. It was the Wolverine’s fifth straight win. Mark Donnal had 26 points, nine rebounds and three blocks — all career highs. Donnal scored seven during a 9-2 run to open the second half that put the Wolverines in front for good. Caris LeVert scored 22 with a career-best tying 10 assists and scored the first nine points for the Wolverines. The Wolverines are 11-3 on the season. U of M will host Penn State at noon on Saturday.

Western Michigan lost to Vanderbilt 86-61 on the road to fall to 5-7. The Broncos made only 2 of 18 from 3-point range.

High School Basketball

Union City beat St. Phillip 68-48 in a game heard on WBCK last night. Colin Kreger had 21 for Union City and Jalen Bose had 18. Union City moves to 3-1 and the Tigers fall to 2-3. Wednesday night was the first game of the season for St. Philip senior David Downey, who was carted off the field during St. Philip's state championship football game with an elbow injury.

Girls Basketball

St. Philip 54, Union City 29. Kameron Haley had 18 points and 11 rebounds as St. Philip goes to 4-2.

Marshall Academy 42, Tekonsha 29. Elayna Hoyt had 17.

Climax-Scotts 59, Quincy 35 as the Panthers go to 6-0.

Wrestling

Lakeview won it’s 8th straight All-City Wrestling title. The Spartans' 'A' squad went 3-0 in the round-robin All-City Tournament with wins over Harper Creek, Pennfield and Battle Creek Central. Harper Creek went 2-1 on the day.

College Hockey

The 10th-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team clinched its record 17th Great Lakes Invitational title with a 4-2 win over Michigan Tech on Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena. Northern Michigan beat MSU 2-1 in OT to take third place.

WMU’s Hockey team won its 3rd straight with a 1-0 shutout over Bowling Green.

Red Wings

The Red Wings return to Joe Louis Arena tonight to host the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pistons

The Pistons host the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight at the Palace. Detroit lost their third straight in New York on Tuesday.

WMU Loses Braverman to Draft

WMU’s football team got some bad news on Wednesday. Receiver Daniel Braverman has decided to forego his senior year and declare for the NFL Draft. The junior slot receiver, who had 108 receptions – 8.3 per game, ranking him in a tie for second nationally – announced his intentions on Twitter.

Lions

The Lions end the regular season with a road game against the Bears on Sunday. 12 noon on WBCK.

Hoyer on the Mend for Houston

Houston quarterback Brian Hoyer is out of the NFL's concussion protocol and the former Spartan will start on Sunday against Jacksonville as the Texans try to win the AFC South title.
