College Basketball

The Spartans beat Penn State 92-65 on Sunday. Bryn Forbes scored all 20 of his points in the first half.  Denzel Valentine added 10 points after missing four games with a knee injury.  The Spartans are off until Thursday when they host Iowa.  Hear the Tom Izzo Show tonight at 7pm on WBCK.

Michigan is on its home floor tomorrow night hosting third-ranked Maryland.

Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have won four straight on a road trip after a 2-1 win at Anaheim on Sunday. Detroit scored very early in this one with Tomas Tatar finding the net after just 16 seconds.  The Ducks tied it at one in the first.  That would be all of the scoring until the third period when Riley Sheahan scored for Detroit.  The Ducks pulled their goalie, but Petr Mrazek held on for the Red Wings. Mrazek turned away 30 shots.  The Wings play the Kings in L-A tonight at 10:30 and then wrap up the road trip on Thursday in Phoenix.

NFL

The first weekend of NFL playoffs are in the books….

Kansas City beat Houston 30-0.

Pittsburgh edged Cinncinnati 18-16.  The Steelers kicked the winning field goal with seconds left after the Bengals opened the door with penalties.

Seattle beat Minnesota 10-9.  It was -6 at kickoff.   Vikings kicker Blair Walsh missed a 27 yard field goal with :22 seconds left.

Green Bay beat Washington 35-18.  The Pack was down 11-0 early.  Aaron Rodgers threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns for Green Bay. Former Spartan Kirk Cousins was 29-of-46 for 329 yards and a TD for the 'Skins.

Saturday the Patriots host the Chiefs, and the Packers are at Phoenix.

Sunday, the Seahawks are at Carolina and the Steelers go to Denver.

College Football Playoff

The champion of college football will be crowned tonight in the desert. Top-ranked Clemson goes up against number-two Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

Lions

The Lions have their new general manager. They'll formally introduce Bob Quinn as executive vice president and GM at a 2 p.m. press conference this afternoon. The 39-year-old Quinn has been in the Patriots' organization since 2000, serving as director of pro scouting since 2012. Lions’ president Rod Wood announced the hiring Friday night.

Ernie Accorsi is sticking around with the Lions. He was brought in as a consultant to help in the search for a new general manager. With Bob Quinn now hired in that role, Accorsi will stay on as a special advisor to president Rod Wood. He's been a GM for three different teams.

Marshall’s Adam Gase New Miami Coach

Football's Miami Dolphins have a new head coach. 37-year-old Adam Gase, a 1996 graduate of Marshall High School, is now the youngest head coach in the N-F-L.

Gase previously worked with four N-F-L teams, most recently as an offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Pistons

The Pistons host the Spurs tomorrow at The Palace. Detroit beat Brooklyn on Saturday for its third straight win.

High School Basketball

Waldron at St. Philip, Athens at Mendon, Colon at Litchfield, Pittsford at Bellevue, Tekonsha at Burr Oak.  In Girls Basketball tonight, Athens plays at Mendon.

Tomorrow night, Battle Creek Central will host Benton Harbor….7:30pm on WBCK.

Wrestling

Marshall won the Paul Smeltzer Invitational Wrestling match at Union City on Saturday.

The Lakeview “B” Squad finished second to Jackson Northwest at the Homer Invite, going 4-1 on the day Saturday.

Golf

Jordan Speith won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the opening event of the PGA Tour season.  Speith beat Patrick Reed and the rest of the field by 8 strokes.
