Ok...it's only one game into the season...but...

The Pistons opened the regular season on the road with a 106-94 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 21 points, Andre Drummond added 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Marcus Morris also had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Last season, Atlanta lost only six games on its home court. The Pistons will host the Utah Jazz tomorrow night at The Palace in the home opener.

Red Wings

The Red Wings lost to the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 in Detroit. Goalie Petr Mrazek stopped 18 shots in the loss, but had a miscue in the second period that led to the Hurricanes first goal when he came out of the crease and Victor Rask stole his clearing pass and put the puck into an empty net. A giveaway was also an issue in Carolina's second goal when Niklas Kronwall failed to clear the puck from Detroit's zone and Ron Hainsey scored. Jakub Kindl tied the score late in the second period with Detroit's lone goal of the game. The Wings will host the Ottawa Senators in the first of a home-and-home series on Friday.

Baseball

Eric Hosmer's sac-fly RBI in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Royals a 5-4 win over the Mets in Game One of the World Series. Alcides Escobar led off the bottom of the first with an inside-the-park homer for the Royals. The game went to extras after Alex Gordon clubbed a tying solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Scheduled Game Four starter Chris Young tossed three no-hit innings in relief to get the win. Kansas City will host New York in Game Two of the World Series tonight. The Mets will will count on Jacob deGrom and Kansas City will counter with Johnny Cueto. Game 2 is Wednesday in KC, games 3, 4, and 5 are in New York starting Friday night. The father of Kansas City's starting pitcher Edinson Volquez died, in his native Dominican Republic, reportedly from heart complications. It happened just before Volquez took the mound. Royals manager Ned Yost said Volquez's family asked the team not to tell him.

Mallett Released

The Texans released former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett three days after he missed the team's charter flight to Miami for the game against the Dolphins. The 27-year-old quarterback claimed he got caught in traffic, and this wasn't the first time he drew coach Bill O'Brien's ire for being tardy - Mallett missed a practice in training camp after oversleeping.  His poor play in four starts for the QB-needy Texans certainly didn't help, and now Houston is left looking to add another quarterback to the roster to back up starter and former Spartan Brian Hoyer.
