The Pistons lost in New Orleans last night, 109-86.  Detroit set a record for the worst free-throw percentage in history, going 3 for17 at the line. Pistons center Andre Drummond was ejected for swatting at the back of Pelicans guard Tim Frazier's head after Frazier had ripped away a rebound late in the third quarter. Drummond had 13 points and 17 rebounds to that point, but also missed nine of 10 free throws. The Pistons were also 3 of 23 from the 3-point line. Anthony Davis had 33 points and 14 rebounds, as the New Orleans Pelicans snapped a three-game skid.

Big Ten Basketball

MSU lost at Illinois 73-70 last night.  The Spartans nearly mounted a comeback, but mistakes kept them out of any chance to win.  The Illini turned 15 Spartan giveaways into 18 points.  With the loss, the Spartans drop to 10-7 in the Big Ten.  Maryland won their game to go to 11-6.  They host the Spartans on Saturday.

Minnesota is 10-6 and hosts Nebraska tonight and finish at Wisconsin on Sunday.

The Michigan Wolverines lost at Northwestern.  Derek Pardon scored on a layup off a long inbound pass to give Northwestern a 67-65 victory over Michigan on Wednesday night.  The Wolverines' Zak Irvin had just missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds. The ball got knocked out of bounds and, after a timeout, Nathan Taphorn threw a pass the length of the court, hitting Pardon in stride for the winning shot.  As the buzzer sounded, fans packing Welsh-Ryan Arena poured onto the court.   The win was just what the Wildcats needed after dropping five of seven.  Now they have a shot at making their first NCAA Tournament.

The Wolverines will finish this weekend at Nebraska.

Red Wings’ GM Ken Holland made four trades before Wednesday’s deadline, getting five draft picks and a player in exchange for Tomas Jurco, Brendan Smith, Steve Ott and Thomas Vanek.  The Red Wings skate at Calgary on Friday night.

Tigers

The Tigers lost to the Washington Nationals 9-1 and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 Wednesday in split-squad games.  Mike Pelfrey, experimenting with some new pitches, took his second loss of the spring against Washington.   Michael Fulmer looked sharp in his outing against the Jays.   Justin Verlander works against the Pirates today in Lakeland.

MSU Toughens Policy After Doctor Scandal

Michigan State University is responding to sexual assault allegations against a sports doctor by requiring written consent for certain treatments. Michigan State says chaperones also can be present for any appointment. The policies are a result of widespread allegations that Dr. Larry Nassar molested women and girls when they were supposed to be treated for sports injuries.
