The Pistons came from behind to beat Brooklyn 90-89 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.   Detroit outscored the Nets by 5 in the final quarter for the win.  Marcus Morris led the Pistons with 28 points and 13 rebounds.  Ish Smith had 21.  Andre Drummond scored just two points, but had 11 rebounds.  The Pistons are 2 ½ games behind Miami and Indiana for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.  The Bulls are 1 ½ ahead of the Pistons.  Detroit plays in Milwaukee tonight.

Pope Arrested for DUI

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was arrested early Thursday in Auburn Hills, and police say he was legally drunk.  WXYT reports that the 24 year old Piston forward was speeding at about 2:50am and registered a blood alcohol level of .08.


Red Wings

The Red Wings lost 5-3 at Tampa Bay.    Franz Nielson, Danny DeKeyser and Mike Green scored the Red Wing goals.  Henrik Zetterberg assisted on DeKeyser’s goal for his 900th NHL point.   Zetterberg has now played in 995 NHL games. Five different players scored for the Lightning against goalie Petr Mrazek as they played without top-scorer Nikita Kucherov, who was sick.  Tampa won all five meetings with the Wings this season.  The Wings’ Anthony Mantha broke a finger during a fight and left the game.  They’re home to play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at the Joe. After Saturday, the Wings have four games left, three at Joe Louis Arena.

 

Tigers

The Tigers beat Baltimore 7-3 as Matt Boyd shut out the Birds over his 4 innings.  Anibal Sanchez allowed just one run over four innings.  Detroit had home runs from Omar Infante, Tyler Collins, and James McCann.  Jordan Zimmerman will start tonight in Jupiter against Miami.  They play Miami again on Saturday afternoon and then head north.  95.3 WBCK will broadcast tomorrow’s spring game and all of the regular season games.  Opening day is Monday afternoon in Chicago against the White Sox.

Tigers’ Roster Set

The Tigers have cut Rule 5 pitcher Daniel Stumpf to get down to the 25 man roster.   They also released veteran right hander Mike Pelfrey.  Pelfrey is owed $8 million this year, the second year of a two-year contract.

Former Tiger reliever Mark Lowe has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners, where he once played.  The 33 year old Lowe, who is being paid $5.5 million this season by the Tigers, lives in Vancouver Washington and will start the year in Tacoma.

NCAA Basketball

The final four is set for this weekend. North Carolina plays Oregon and South Carolina takes on Gonzaga in Glendale Arizona.

Kansas point guard Frank Mason III has received the AP Player of the Year trophy. He averaged 20.9 points, 5.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds in helping his team finish 31-5.

UConn plays Mississippi State and South Carolina plays Stanford in the Women’s Final Four.

WNIT

The Michigan women's basketball team will play Georgia Tech on Saturday at 3 at Detroit Mercy in the WNIT final.

TCU is the men’s NIT champion following an 88-56 rout of Georgia Tech.
