Sports: Price, Jays lose; Astros beat KC
Baseball
The favored home teams didn’t fare well in baseball’s playoffs on Thursday. The Blue Jays lost 5-3 to the Rangers in Game 1 of their AL Division Series as ace David Price was tagged for five runs in seven innings. Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homer off Price. Rougned Odor added a solo shot and Yovani Gallardo gave up two runs in five innings to get the win. The Astros beat the Royals 5-2. Houston had home runs from George Springer and Colby Rasmus. Collin McHugh gave up a pair of homers to Kendrys Morales but lasted six innings before four Houston relievers scattered three runners over the final three innings.
Four games are scheduled for today. The Rangers are in Toronto at 12:30pm. The Astros go for two in a row in Kansas City at 3:30. The Cubs play in St. Louis at 6:30. The Dodgers host the Mets at 9:30.
Pistons
The Pistons lost to Brooklyn 93-83 in a pre-season game. Ersan Ilyasova led Detroit with 15 points, Andre Drummond added 14 points and had 11 rebounds and Stanley Jackson contributed 12 points. The Pistons (0-2) will be in Milwaukee tomorrow night as they continue the preseason against the Bucks.
Thursday Night Football
Forty-year-old Matt Hasselbeck threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns, pushing the Colts to a 27-20 win over the Texans at NRG Stadium on "Thursday Night Football." Hasselbeck made his second consecutive start for the injured Andrew Luck and has led Indianapolis to a 3-and-2 record. His two TD passes were to former Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson. Frank Gore rumbled for 98 yards on 22 carries and a TD. Texans' QB Ryan Mallett left the game late in the second quarter due to injury and never returned after being replaced by Brian Hoyer.
Lions
The Lions continue to get ready to host the Cardinals at Ford Field Sunday. Haloti Ngata sat out of practice again yesterday with an injured calf. Guard Larry Worford, running back Joique Bell, tight end Eric Ebron and line backer Travis Lewis were all sidelined yesterday with injuries. Linebacker DeAndre Levy was a full participant in drills for a second straight day and could make his 2015 debut against the Cardinals. The Lions host the Arizona Cardinals Sunday. Broadcast time is 3pm on WBCK.
Red Wings
The Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the season opener at Joe Louis Arena tonight. Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal for the Red Wings.
MSU Football
MSU, 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, is on the road Saturday night against Rutgers. Broadcast time is 6:30 on WBCK.
Michigan Football
Michigan will host Northwestern on Saturday in Ann Arbor. Broadcast time is 2:30 on Mix 104.9.
WMU-CMU
Western Michigan hosts CMU at noon on Saturday at Waldo Stadium. Western earned a win on the road last season in Mount Pleasant, and the Chippewas did the same the year before in Kalamazoo.
Eastern Michigan will play host to Akron on Saturday.

Calhoun Christian 3, Maple Valley 0. Lauren Wilcox had 16 kills.
Bronson 3, Cassopolis 0. The top-ranked Vikings were led by Jill Pyles with 15 kills.

BC Central Names New Basketball Coach
Battle Creek Central has a new basketball coach. Durant Crum will take over for Greg Williams, who recently stepped down. Crum was the former coach at Albion High School for 11 years before the school closed.
