The Red Wings beat the Flyers in a 3-2 shootout win.  With the win, Detroit ends a 12-game regular season losing streak in Philadelphia going back 19 years.  Tomas Tatar scored the first goal for Detroit.  Andreas Athanasiou tied it midway through the third period and sent it to OT and the eventual shootout.  Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for Detroit,  including all three shots in the shootout.  Anthanasiou put the game away in the shootout.   The Wings will host Vancouver at the Joe on Thursday night.

WMU Football

No. 14 Western Michigan rallied for a 37-21 win over Kent State on Tuesday night to become the nation's first 10-win team.  Jarvion Franklin rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown and Fabian Johnson added a career-high 125 yards.  Franklin's 19-yard TD with 8:27 helped the Broncos finally put away the upset-minded Golden Flashes, who jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  WMU scored 21 straight points before swinging the game with a safety in the fourth.

Western Michigan gets back on a "normal" schedule and return home on Nov. 19 to play Buffalo, which is just 2-7.

If Western Michigan wins its final three regular-season games and the MAC championship game, it would be in line to go to the Cotton Bowl, which reserves a spot for the highest-ranked, non-Power Five conference team.

EMU Wins

Eastern Michigan overcame a 21-point first-quarter deficit to beat Ball State 48-41 on Tuesday night.

Big Ten Friday Night Football

Last week the Big Ten announced there would be six Friday night football games a year for the next five seasons.  The games are being added to the conference's new television agreements with ESPN/ABC and Fox.  One of those games will have Michigan State at Northwestern on October 27th.   The Big Ten already has had Friday night games on Labor Day weekend.

Volleyball

Only two of six Battle Creek area volleyball teams will move on to the 'Sweet 16' following last night’s regional semifinal matchups.

Bronson beat Bridgman 3-0. The defending Class C state champs move on to Thursday's regional final against Kalamazoo Christian.

Athens beat St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran , 3-0 to move on to Regionals.

St. Philip lost in three to Mendon.

Athens and Mendon play Thursday night at Bellevue.

Harper Creek lost to Buchanan 4-1 as the Beavers’ season ends..

Gull Lake lost to DeWitt in three.

Olivet lost in three to Lake Odessa Lakewood.

KCC Basketball

KCC’s Men’s basketball team fell to 0-3 on the season with an 81-71 loss to U of M Dearborn.

Collmenter Signs with Atlanta

Former Homer High School and CMU standout Josh Collmenter has signed a 1-year deal with the Atlanta Braves, the team that picked him up late last season.   Reports say the 30 year old pitcher will make 1.2 million with a chance to double that with incentives.

Red Wings New Stadium Costs Go Up

Officials say the cost of building the Detroit Red Wings' new arena has jumped by $105 million to nearly $733 million.  The city says it’s due to the cost of materials, permits, design refinements and subcontractor agreements.  Reports say it could go higher.

Lions Football

The 5-4 Lions are a half-game out of first place in the NFC North as they head into their bye week. High School Football Playoffs

Climax-Scotts plays at Ottawa Lake Whiteford in a Region 4 matchup this weekend.   Since there’s significant travel time to Friday’s game, Climax-Scotts will release elementary students and hour early at 2:41on Friday to board buses or to be picked up from the elementary. 

 NASCAR

Two races remain in this season’s Race to the Sprint Cup.  This Sunday at 3:30 they’ll race at Phoenix International Raceway in the Can-AM 500.   The season ends on November 20th at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

 College Basketball

Michigan State’s basketball team is ranked 12th in the AP poll and 9th in the USA Today poll.  The Spartans have their regular season opener this Friday against Arizona in Honolulu.
