The Red Wings lost to the Blackhawks 4-2 on Thursday at Little Caesar’s Arena.   It was their first loss at home in three pre-season games. Petr Mrazek made 36 saves and looked sharp for the Wings.   Michael Rasmussen, their top draft pick this year, scored in the second period to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.  The Red Wings host Toronto tonight at the new arena and close out the pre-season in Toronto on Saturday.   The regular season starts at the new arena October 5th against the Wild.

High School Football

Week 6 of the High School Football season got underway Thursday night, as Lakeview beat Kalamazoo Central 28-22.  The Spartans’ Cam Gillette blocked a punt to set up the winning touchdown, a Jalen Watkins 13 yard run with just over two minutes left.  Lakeview is now 2-4 on the season.  The game was moved up a day at the request of the Kalamazoo school district so its students could observe Yom Kippur.

Thursday Night Football

The Packers beat the Bears, 35-14.    Aaron Rodgers threw for 179 yards and four touchdowns.   Rodgers hit Davan Adams and Randall Cobb for short TDs in the first quarter before Jordy Nelson added a pair of second-half scoring receptions to help the Packers get to 3-1.

KCC Volleyball

The KCC volleyball team beat Jackson Community College in three.  Hannah Landis had 17 kills and 12 digs to go with two blocks.  Emily Delmotte had 9 kills. The Lady Bruins are 12-3, 7-3 in conference play and are moving into the tough part of their schedule.

Tigers

The Tigers beat the Royals 4-1 Thursday night in Kansas City to end their losing streak at 9.  Lefty Daniel Norris looked sharp in his final start of 2017, going five innings and giving up just two hits, and no runs or walks. He finishes at 5-8 and a 5.31 ERA.  The game was scoreless until the 5th, when Jacoby Jones drove in Andrew Romine for a 1-0 Tiger lead.  Nick Castellanos did most of the hitting for the Tigers again, going 2 for 4 and knocking in three runs.  Warwick Saupold gave up the only run of the night, as Paulo Orlando homered for the second straight night. The Tigers will play their final three games of the season in Minnesota this weekend.  The Twins have clinched  the final wild card spot in the AL and will play the Yankees or Red Sox in a winner-take-all game on Tuesday.  Matt Boyd starts for the Tigers tonight.  Boyd is 6-10, but has been the Tigers’ best pitcher in September.   Hear the game after High School Football on 95.3 WBCK.

MLB

The Rockies have a 2 game lead over Milwaukee for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.  The Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention last night.  The Brewers have three games with the Cardinals this weekend.  The Rockies have three with the Dodgers.

College Football

Michigan State will host Iowa on Saturday in a matchup of 3-1 teams.  95.3 WBCK will bring you the Spartan game Saturday at 2:30.

Western Michigan is now 2-2 on the season and will host Ball State on Saturday.

Lions

The Lions play at Minnesota Sunday.

PGA

The United States has a 3 ½ to 1 ½ lead over the International team after the first day of Presidents Cup at Liberty National in Jersey City.

Pistons

The Pistons open the regular season at little Caesar’s Arena  October 18th against Charlotte. Their first home exhibition game is also against the Hornets on Oct. 4.
