The Red Wings lost to Tampa Bay 4-3 at the Joe.  The Wings fell behind after two early goals, but climbed back into it.  Defenseman Ryan Sproul got his first career goal and had an assist.  Frans Nielsen and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit.   With the game tied at 3, Nikita Kucherov scored his second goal of the game with 1:10 left to give the Tampa Bay Lightning the win.  Petr Mrazek stopped 18 shots, but made a critical misplay behind the net to allow an easy Tampa goal.  The Wings skate against the Capitals in Washington on Friday night.

Volleyball

The defending state champion Bronson Vikings are headed back to the State  Volleyball Semi-finals after a win over ninth-ranked Laingsburg.  Bronson won it in three.  Allison Sikorski led the Bronson offense with 10 kills and 15 digs. The Vikings will face Calumet in Thursday's final at Kellogg Arena, beginning at 3:45 p.m.   Mendon lost to Plymouth Christian in four as the Hornets’ season ends.

College Basketball
Michigan State was beaten by #2 Kentucky, 69-48 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.    The Spartans (0-2) shot 32.8 percent from the field (20 of 61) including 5 for 26 (19.2 percent) from beyond the arc.  Kenny Goins and Cassius Winston led the Spartans with nine points each.  Freshman Miles Bridges was held to six points on 2-for-11 shooting but he grabbed 12 rebounds.  Hear the Coach Tom Izzo Show tonight at 7 on WBCK.   The Spartans play Mississippi Valley State on Friday night and play Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 6pm.

Eastern Michigan beat Rochester College 78-63.

WMU plays #3 Villanova, the national champions, on Thursday morning.

Michigan plays Marquette on Thursday night.

Pistons

The Pistons are in New York to play the Knicks tonight.  Detroit is in Cleveland to play the World Champs on Friday.

MLB Awards

Indians’ manager Terry Francona is the American League Manager of the Year.   Cubs’ manager Joe Madden was edged out by Dodgers rookie skipper Dave Roberts.   The Cy Young will be awarded tonight.   Finalists include Tigers Justin Verlander and former Tigers Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer.   MVP awards come Thursday.   Meanwhile, reports say the San Francisco Giants are interested in trading for Tigers’ right fielder J.D. Martinez.

KCC Basketball

The KCC women’s basketball team lost to the Albion College JV squad, 77-62.

NASCAR

Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson will race for the NASCAR championship this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Soccer

The U-S men's soccer team is in trouble, after suffering a 4-0 loss to Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying last night.  Joel Campbell scored twice against the U-S in the final minutes.  The loss comes after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mexico last week.  The U-S now sits at the bottom of their six-nation qualifying group. Only the top three teams advance to the 2018 world cup finals in Russia.

College Football

Western Michigan remains at No. 14.  The Broncos play Buffalo this Saturday at Waldo Stadium.   ESPN's 'College GameDay' will broadcast live from Kalamazoo ahead of the Broncos' 3:30 p.m. matchup.   At 10-0, Western Michigan is one of two unbeaten teams remaining along with top-ranked Alabama.

#3 Michigan hosts Indiana at 2:30 Saturday on 104.9 the Edge.

NFL

The 5-4 Lions are tied with Minnesota for first place in the NFC North.  Detroit will play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Ford Field.
