MLB Winter Meetings

There was interest expressed in several Tigers’, but GM Al Avila left Washington’s Winter Meetings without doing much. The Tigers have picked left-handed pitcher Daniel Stumpf from the Kansas City Royals in the Rule 5 Draft.  The 25 year old pitched with both the Phillies and Royals in the minor league last season.  The Tigers haven’t made a Rule 5 pick in several seasons.  It means the Tigers will need to keep Stumpf on their major league roster all season, or return him to the Royals.  He takes the 40th and final roster spot for the Tigers. M-Live reporter Evan Woodbery said on Twitter that “This is 2nd time Daniel Stumpf picked in Rule 5 Draft. Was suspended 80 games after testing + for an anabolic steroid in April.”   The Phillies had picked up Stumpf, but returned him to the Royals in July.

The Tigers reportedly had heard from at least one interested team in regards to possible deals for Jose Iglesias, Justin Wilson, Shane Green, Anibal Sanchez, Justin Verlander, J.D. Martinez, Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, and Ian Kinsler. The Tigers are over the salary cap as things stand now, and will have to pay the so-called “luxury tax.”

The Cardinals are expected to announce signing Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler to a long term deal.
