Sports: Red Wings Start Pre-Season, Play at New Arena Saturday
The Detroit Red Wings started hockey’s pre-season with a 4-2 loss to the Bruins. A 3-goal second period by the Bruins was the difference in the game. Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. The Wings play at Pittsburgh tonight, at Chicago on Thursday, and finally host their first game ever at Little Caesar’s Arena this Saturday at 7, as the Bruins come to Detroit.
The Tigers lost their second in a row to the A’s, 9-8 at Comerica Park. Chad Bell started and gave up three runs in his 3 1/3 innings, but the Tigers came back to take a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Alex Presley hit a solo homer, and then James McCann tripled in a pair. After a Nick Castellanos two-run homer in the 6th, the Tigers led 8-4. In the 8th, reliever Alex Wilson was touched up for four runs, as he gave up a grand slam homer to Jed Lowrie. The A’s win it 9-8. Anibal Sanchez starts for the Tigers today against the A’s. Not much change in baseball’s playoff races last night. The Red Sox lead the Yankees by three games in the AL East. The Cubs lead the Brewers by 3 ½ in the NL Central.
In the Wild Card races, the Yankees are looking good for one spot, with the Twins and Angels battling for the last spot in the American League. The Angels lost ground after a loss to Cleveland. Arizona looks good for one Wild Card spot in the NL, with Colorado and Milwaukee battling for the last spot.

WMU hosts the Wagner Seahawks this Saturday night at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo. That game will be broadcast on ESPN3. Wagner College is located at Staten Island, New York.

Baseball set a new record for home runs in a season, breaking the record set in 2000. Detroit's Alex Presley tied the record in the Tiger’s game with Oakland, and Kansas City's Alex Gordon hit MLB's record 5,694th. In 2000, Sammy Sosa led the major leagues with 50 home runs and Barry Bonds hit 49. Miami's Giancarlo Stanton leads the major leagues with 55 home runs this year, followed by New York Yankees rookie Aaron Judge with 44.

Climax-Scotts is ranked fifth in Division 8, one behind Mendon. Bellevue is ranked 5th in the 8-player division.
