Red Wings

The Red Wings beat the Stars in Dallas, 3-2 in overtime. Pavel Datsyuk scored a power-play goal in the extra period to give the wings their third straight win.  Rookie center Andreas Athanasiou scored Detroit's first two goals.  Goalie Jimmy Howard won for the first time since Dec. 3.  Howard made 39 saves.  The Red Wings have won their last seven games in Dallas and pass the Islanders for fifth place in the East and moved within three points of the Atlantic Division lead.  The Wings (32-20-11) are back in action Wednesday when they begin a home and home with the Blackhawks at the Joe.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland indicated for several weeks that he was only interested in a deal for a significant upgrade. He couldn't find it, as options were limited and, apparently, prices too high. So the Red Wings stood pat during Monday's NHL trade deadline.

Tigers

The Tigers beat Florida Southern 7-2 to kick off Spring Training.   It was 73 degrees at Joker Marchant Stadium, where the Tigers first official spring game will be played today against the Pirates.  Detroit played most of its expected opening day lineup but pulled regulars early. Ian Kinsler had a single in his only at-bat to open the game for the Tigers.  Seven minor league prospects pitched for Detroit.  Infielder JaCoby Jones, obtained from Pittsburgh in the Joachim Soria trade last summer, hit a three run homer. During the offseason, Jones was suspended 50 games following a positive test for a drug of abuse under baseball's minor league drug program.  Infielders Dominic Ficociello and Dixon Machado each had two hits for the Tigers.  Today, former Tiger Kyle Lobstein will pitch for the Pirates against lefty Matt Boyd, who came to Detroit in the David Price deal last summer.

Brady Contract

Tom Brady has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Patriots. The deal will significantly lessen Brady's salary cap hit for the team for 2016.  The 38-year old has said for years that he would like to play into his 40's, and it appears he may get what he wanted.

Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday night that Ben Wallace will be a part of its next class.  Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, helped the Detroit Pistons win the 2004 NBA title.  He will be inducted Sept. 9 along with former Detroit Red Wings Brendan Shanahan and Chris Osgood.  The class also includes former University of Detroit and Detroit Pistons standout John Long, former Detroit Lion Robert "Bob" Mann, former Flint Powers High School basketball coach Kathy McGee, Oakland University swimming coach Pete Hovland, and baseball writer Tom Gage.  Former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter and Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Modano, both of whom are from Michigan, will be honored after being unable to attend their induction ceremony last year.
