Red Wings

The Red Wings opened the season with at 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins at Joe Louis Arena.  The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game in the first period but Danny DeKeyser  and Gustav Nyquist scored early in the second to turn the game around.  Jimmy Howard turned aside 16 shots in the win. Detroit will host the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday before the Bruins return to town for another game next Wednesday.

Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are 2-0 in the preseason after a 94-80 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at The Palace last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 20 points, Andre Drummond had 15 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Josh Smith added 12. The Pistons are on the road Sunday to tip off against the Washington Wizards.

MLB Playoffs

The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals are set to play Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Friday in Baltimore as long as the forecast, which currently calls for rain, clears up.  Baltimore's Chris Tillman is scheduled to face the Royals' James Shields.  Kansas City, which swept the Los Angeles Angels in the divisional round, is back in the ALCS for the first time in 29 years, while the Orioles make their first appearance in the series in 17 years.  In contrasting styles, the power bats of the O's will look to counter the Royals small-ball approach in the series.

In the National League, the Cardinals host Game One on Saturday against the Giants.

Thursday Night Football

the Indianapolis Colts were able to hold on for a 33-28 win against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on "Thursday Night Football."  Indianapolis jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. Andrew Luck finished with 370 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. T.Y. Hilton was Luck's main target hauling in nine catches for 223 yards and a TD. Houston roared back and had the ball with a chance to win the game on the final drive. Ryan Fitzpatrick lost a fumble killing the comeback attempt.

More Peterson Trouble

Prosecutors in Montgomery County, Texas, have filed paperwork to have Adrian Peterson's bail revoked and re-arrest him after the Minnesota running back admitted to smoking marijuana in violation of his bond conditions.  The motion stated that Peterson told a staffer that he had "smoked a little weed" before taking a drug test on Wednesday. Peterson has been free on $15,000 bond following a charge of felony child abuse of one of his sons, with a trial  tentatively set to begin on Dec. 1.  Peterson, the 2012 NFL MVP, remains on the exempt list and away from the Vikings due to his current legal problems. He  has not played in any of the team's past four games.

Laser Pointer Guy Found

The person accused of pointing a laser at Buffalo players during Sunday's Lions game with the Bills has been identified and will face charges.  According to Lions officials, the 17-year old from West Bloomfield has been charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and has also been banned indefinitely from attending events at Ford Field. The season ticket holder who provided the ticket to the accused person has also had his tickets revoked for the rest of the 2014 season. Two players, quarterback Kyle Orton and holder Colton Schmidt said a laser was directed at them during their win over the Lions.

Boys Tennis

The Lakeview High boys’ tennis team qualified for the MHSAA state finals Thursday after finishing third and garnering 19 points at a Division 2 regional at the Portage Central and Portage Northern courts.

Soccer

B.C. Central 3, St. Joe 1.  Cesar Duran, Bawi Lian Sang and Ismael Bautista-Trejo scored for Central.  Isaac Engelhardt made 10 saves.  BCC starts districts Monday.

Pennfield 3, Comstock 0.  Alexa Stephenson had 11 kills.  10 kills from Tess Needham and 17 assists from Kennedy Barlond.

Union City 3, B.C. Central 0.  Rachel Wing had 12 kills, three blocks, five assists and seven digs.

Olivet 3, Springport 0.   Aleena Janousek had 12 kills, five aces and nine digs; Taylor Holmes had nine aces and 20 assists.

Calhoun Christian 3, Maple Valley 1.  Kirby Frodge and Mai Moody had eight kills apiece, Denise Penrod had 13 aces and 18 digs.

Lakeview’s boys and girls’ cross country teams both finished second at the Dowagiac Invite.

College Football

Eighth-ranked Michigan State travels to West Lafayette tomorrow to take on Purdue. Four and one Michigan State plays at Purdue this Saturday….2pm on WBCK.

The University of Michigan hosts Penn State at the Big House tomorrow night.  The game marks the first ever Big Ten conference matchup held under the lights in Ann Arbor.  Michigan is 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play.  ….6pm on Mix 104.9 WBXX.
