Power Play Burns The Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings were unable to stop the Tampa Bay Lightning power play Tuesday, as they would fall 3-2 at a sold out Joe Louis Arena. The loss puts the Red Wings in a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference 1st Round series.

Darren Helm and Gustav Nyquist would score the Red Wing goals, both in the 2nd period to tie the game at two apiece. The Lightning would score all three goals on the man advantage, with Nikita Kucherov scoring twice and assisting on Ondrej Palat’s game winner in the 3rd period.

Game 5 of the series takes place in Tampa Thursday night at 7:05pm.

Tigers Fall to Perez, Royals

The Detroit Tigers were unable to find any offense early in the second straight game and mounted another comeback before falling 8-6 to the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night. Salvador Perez would have a big night for the Royals, driving in a career-high five runs in the win for the defending World Champions.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hammered his fifth homer of the season, driving in three runs in the loss for the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera also knocked in two runs and Ian Kinsler had two hits on the night. Shane Greene would take the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 innings to put him at 1-1 on the season for Detroit.

Pistons Prep for Game 2 Against the Cavaliers

The Detroit Pistons return to action tonight in Cleveland for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Cavaliers. The Pistons trail in the best-of-seven series 1-0 after Sunday’s 106-101 defeat. The Pistons hope to get home-court advantage with a win before the series shifts to Detroit Friday. Tip-off at the Quicken Loans Arena tonight at 8pm.

Lady Bruins Split, Back in Action Today

The Kellogg Community College Bruins softball team split a double header with the Lake Michigan College Redhawks Tuesday, falling in the opener 7-3 in eight innings before earning a 9-5 win in the nightcap.

The Lady Bruins play again today at home at Bailey Park, as they host the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s West Division-leading Lansing Community College Stars. First pitch at City Field is at 3pm today.

High School Baseball, Softball in Full Swing

In the High School ranks, the Lakeview Spartans swept the Division 1 3rd-ranked Portage Northern Huskies in baseball, sweeping the double header 12-2 and 10-1. The St. Philip Tigers swept the Camden-Frontier Redskins 15-0 and 18-2. The Pennfield Panthers dropped a twinbill to Coldwater 11-5 and 5-0. The Marshall Redhawks shut down Parma Western 5-0 and 4-0, and the Harper Creek Beavers dropped a pair to Jackson Lumen Christi 5-1 and 14-8. Tekonsha earned a sweep over Burr Oak and Climax-Scotts swept Pittsford.

In softball action, Portage Northern knocked off Lakeview 8-0 and 13-6, Coldwater defeated Pennfield 14-0 and 9-8, and Parma Western swept Marshall 7-1 and 16-0. Bellevue swept Waldron and Climax-Scotts won their first two games of the season over Pittsford.
