The Tigers beat the White Sox 7-2 to even the series in Detroit. The Tigers scored six runs in the first inning to give Max Scherer all the runs he needed.  Nick Castellanos capped the inning with a 3-run homer. Castellanos knocked in a final run with an RBI single in the 7th. Max Scherzer pitched 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits and struck out 6 for his 13th win against 3 losses. Detroit leads the division by 5 games over second placeKansas City and 6 ½ overCleveland.   Cleveland threw in the towel yesterday, sending one of their top pitchers, Justin Masterson, to the Cardinals for a prospect.  Drew Smyly will pitch forDetroit against the White Sox today.  Broadcast time is 12:40 on WBCK.

Bombers

A sweep for the Bombers, as they took both games of a home and home doubleheader with Kalamazoo.  The Bombers beat the Growlers 7-6 in game 1, at C.O. Brown Stadium.  Andrew Mitchell started and gave up just one unearned run in 6 innings.   The Growlers scored 4 times in the 9th to tie the game, but the Bombers won it as Laz Rivera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  They beat Kalamazoo again in the nightcap at Homer Stryker Field, 8-4.  Collin Orellana went 8 innings, giving up just four hits and two runs for the win.  MSU’s Anthony Checky went 3 for 4 and knocked in two runs.   Tonight, the La Crosse Loggers come to Battle Creek to play the Bombers.

HBC Behnke’s to the Finals

It’ll be he Battle Creek Merchants versus HBC Behnke at Nichols Field for two games on Friday as they battle for an automatic berth in the NABF tournament, coming up August 13th-17th in Battle Creek.   It’s a best of 3, so they’ll play Saturday if it’s a split on Friday.   The losing team will still have a chance to play their way into NABF World Series at the regional qualifier next weekend in Saginaw.

Tigers Reed Faces Charges

Tigers' minor league pitcher Evan Reed is scheduled to be in court today. Reed was charged yesterday with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct stemming from an alleged incident in April.  A 45-year-old woman claims she was sexually assaulted by the pitcher in his room at the Motor City Casino in Detroit after drinking with him at a bar in Royal Oak.  Reed is expected to turn himself in to authorities this morning and will be arraigned in 36th District Court. He was on the Tigers opening day roster and appeared in 43 games with Detroit before he was sent down to Triple-A Toledo in mid-June.

Red Wings Hire Coaches

The Red Wings have hired Jim Hiller and Andrew Brewer as assistant coaches. Hiller, who played 23 games withDetroitin 1992-93, had been the coach of the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League since 2009. Hiller was also named WHL coach of the year for the 2011-12 season. Brewer already has experience working under Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. He was part of Babcock’s TeamCanadastaff at the Sochi Olympics earlier this year. Brewer also spent the past three years as Hockey

Canada’s video coach.

MLB Trade Deadline

Today is the last day for major league teams to make deals before the non-waiver trade deadline. Clubs have until 4 p.m. Eastern to make trades without first having to pass players through waivers.  Among the prominent names rumored to be on the block are Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, Rays pitcher David Price, Phillies pitchers Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp and Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd.

Coyotes on the Road

The Battle Creek Coyotes Football team is home on Saturday to play the Toledo Raiders atAthensHigh School. The Coyotes' game day beneficiary will be Chrissy Castellanos, a local woman who is battling cancer.
