Tigers

The Tigers lost their 5th straight game and were swept at home by the Toronto Blue Jays.   Thursday’s score was 7-3.  The Tigers built an early 2-0 lead on an Ian Kinsler triple and a sacrifice fly.  But the Jays took a 3-2 lead, thanks in part to an error by right fielder Torii Hunter.  Toronto has hit a major league-leading 87 home runs and put on a demonstration with a few more against the Tigers.   Justin Verlander went 7 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits and took the loss for the Tigers. Nick Castellanos had three hits for Detroit.  The Tigers are still in first place, but have lost 13 of their last 17.  Drew Smyly starts tonight against the Red Sox in the first of three at Comerica Park. Boston has lost three straight.  Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK-FM.

Tigers Draft Outfielder

The Tigers selected outfielder with their first pick in the 2014 First Year Player Draft. With the 23rd overall pick, Detroit took Derek Hill out of Elk Grove California.  In the second round, the Tigers selected right handed pitcher Spencer Turnbull from the University of Alabama. The draft continues today and tomorrow.

Tigers Short-handed at short

The Tigers may find themselves short-handed, with injuries to their two shortstops.  Eugenio Suarez and Andrew Romine are both dealing with injuries that could force another call-up.   Suarez injured his knee on an awkward slide in his first major league game on Wednesday, the same day the Tigers designated Danny Worth for assignment. If Worth clears waivers, he has the right to decline an assignment and, instead, elect free agency. With Worth likely out of the picture, Detroit could call up infielder Hernan Perez if Suarez or Romine are forced to miss several days.

Bombers

The Bombers three game win streak ended Thursday as they lost to the Waterloo Bucks 9-3 at C.O. Brown Stadium.   The Bombers hit the road for a game tonight with the Wisconsin Woodchucks.  They’ll be home Sunday to host the Madison Mallards.
