It was a true pitcher's duel Monday night at Comerica Park between the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. While both teams managed just three hits apiece, the Tigers got the most important one with Justin Upton's 10th homer of the season and 200th of his career. The solo shot in the second inning was all the Motown Cats needed in a 1-0 shutout of the Twins.

Upton would get two of the three Tiger hits in the win, with Jose Iglesias picking up the other lone hit. Matt Boyd tosses six innings of shutout ball and fanning seven to collect his first win of the season (1-2). Francisco Rodriguez closed it out for his 26th save of the season.

The second game of the three-game series is tonight, as the Tigers send out Anibal Sanchez (5-10, 6.75 ERA) to the mound. The Twins counter with Tommy Milone (2-2, 5.23 ERA). Catch the action tonight at 6:45pm on WBCK!

Jipping Prepares for Northwoods League All-Star Game Tonight
The All-Star Break continues in the Northwoods League tonight with the game itself in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Battle Creek Bombers have one lone representative this season in Daniel Jipping to play for the South Division. The Central Michigan player is currently leading the league in hits and second in homers with eight.

Jipping's home run total also gave him the opportunity to represent the south in Monday's Home Run Derby, which took place on a pier in Kenosha Harbor with a makeshift fence with correct distances to Simmons Field, home of the Kenosha Kingfish. Tonight's All-Star Game begins at 8pm.

Firekeepers Casino Hotel Championship Festivities Begin
The third annual Firekeepers Casino Hotel Championship officially takes place Friday, but the festivities begin today at Battle Creek Country Club. The stop for the Symetra Tour - Road to the LPGA has become a fantastic event since its 2014 inaugural event. Net proceeds from the event benefit SAFE Place, a shelter in Battle Creek that helps victims of domestic violence. Madeleine Sheils returns to the event to defend her title at BCCC.

The championship also takes on greater stakes this year, as the event will be used as a qualifier for the Evian Championship in the LPGA, the association's fifth major, in September. This is also the third portion of a four-tournament Potawatomi Cup, involving tournaments created by Potawatomi nation tribes on the Symetra Tour. Others include the Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, and the Island Resort Championship in Harris, Michigan. The finale is at the PHC Classic in Milwaukee in August.

156 golfers will tee it up beginning Friday for a piece of the $100,000 purse. The first golfers on the course Friday, Saturday and Sunday will tee it up at 7:30am.
