The Tigers slipped back into second place by a game after a 3-0 loss to Kansas City. Detroit managed only 2 hits against starter James Shields, who struck out 8.  Rick Porcello went 6 2/3 innings and gave up 2 runs.  He struck out 7 but gave up 7 hits and took the loss. Joachim Soria returned from the DL, and was tagged with a triple by Lorenzo Cain that led to the Royals’ third run. Reliever Phil Coke left the game with back spasms after trying to field a bunt that left the bases loaded with nobody out in the 8th.   But Al Albuquerque got them out of that jam.  Detroit stays a half game ahead of Seattle for the final wild-card spot in the AL.  The Tigers are off today and start a weekend series with Cleveland in Detroit on Friday.   David Price gets the start for the Tigers.  Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.

The US national team will take a 61-game winning streak in international competition into the semifinal match-up against Lithuania today in what is predicted to be their first significant test of the tournament.  The bronze medal game is on Saturday and the gold medal game on Sunday.

The Detroit Lions are on the road Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The season is over for Lions tackle Corey Hilliard after the team placed him on injured reserve yesterday. Hilliard suffered a foot injury in the third quarter of Detroit's opener against the New York Giants on Monday.  Hilliard finished the game after starting tackle LaAdrian Waddle left with a calf injury.  Waddle sat out of practice yesterday. To replace Hilliard on the roster, the Lions re-signed offensive lineman Garret Reynolds.
