Tigers   

The Tigers beat the Yankees 4-3 in 12 innings. The Tigers got a solo home run from Andrew Romine, subbing for injured shortstop Eugenio Suarez, who has a sprained knee. Avilatied the game up in the 7th with a key hit. David Price made his debut as a Tiger pitcher.  He went 8 2/3 innings, struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter in giving up 3 runs to the Yankees. Ex-Yankee Joba Chamberlain, new setup man Joakim Soria and closer Joe Nathan did not allow a base runner over the final 3 1/3. J.D. Martinez helped out Nathan in the 12th, as the closer earned his 23rd save.  Detroit Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter left the game after being hit in the left hand by a pitch from New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances.   It’s just a bruise and he’s day to day.  Justin Verlander starts tonight, as the Tigers have a 4 ½ game lead over the Royals in the Central.  Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.

Tigers Sign ex-closer

The Tigers have signed free-agent reliever Jim Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson had a major league-best 51 saves forBaltimorein 2012 and tied for the big league lead last year with 50. The right-hander was 4-2 with a 7.14 ERA in 38 games with the A's.

Bombers

Tuesday was an off-day for most of the Bombers, as the Northwoods League hosted their MLB Showcase day in Madison.  The North and South split a doubleheader in the Big League Dreams Showcase. The  Battle Creek Bombers are in Wisconsin Rapidstonight.

Northwoods Attendance Record

The Northwoods League set an all-time attendance record of 973,950 fans following the games on August 3.  This number tops the 2012 record.  Barring any major weather issues the Northwoods League expects to reach the one million fan mark in the next two to three days. No summer collegiate league has ever drawn one million fans in a season.

City League Baseball

The Battle Creek Merchants start double-elimination play today at 1 p.m. inSaginaw. They are also scheduled to play on Friday at 4 p.m. and if they win one of those games, they will continue on to Saturday.  Winner of the regional inSaginawwill join host team HBC Behnke at the NABF World series inBattle Creek, starting next Wednesday.

Lions

The Detroit Lions appear to be thin on talent at cornerback. They're counting on veteran Rashean Mathis and second-year pro Darius Slay to be starters.Detroit's cornerbacks will face opponents for the first time this year on Saturday night at home against the Cleveland Browns in an exhibition game.

PGA Championship

Former champion David Toms has withdrawn from the PGA Championship atValhallabecause of a back injury.  Tiger Woods still isn't sure if he'll tee it up at the PGA Championship fromValhallalater this week, but his agent says a decision may be announced today.

Coyotes Home Saturday

The Battle Creek Coyotes finish the regular season Saturday at HarperCreekHigh Schoolagainst the Michiana Thunderhawks.
The 7-2 Coyotes are in the playoffs.
