The Tigers lost inPittsburgh11-6 in the first of a two-game interleague series. Justin Verlander gave up 5 runs in the first and left the game with a sore shoulder. Verlander is scheduled to undergo an MRI inDetroittoday. He has never missed a start in his career. Tiger relievers allowed 4 Pirate home runs, including two by Travis Snider. The Royals won their 8th straight to bump the Tigers out of first place. Rookie left-hander Robbie Ray starts in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez tonight inPittsburgh. Tigers Call Up Another Rookie Starter
Buck Farmer has made two starts above the Single-A level. He will make his first start in the majors Wednesday night for the Detroit Tigers in place of Rick Porcello. Porcello will start Friday, after he pitched Sunday in a 19-inning loss inToronto.
The Tigers also recalled Ian Krol, Justin Miller, and Kevin Whelan fromToledoto replenish the bullpen, and sent down lefties Pat McCoy and Blaine Hardy. All three pitched last night, with only Krol pitching well.
Race Car Death
After not competing in Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International, Tony Stewart has pulled out of an upcoming winged sprint car event inPlymouth,Indiana. Plymouth Speedway announced the news that Stewart would not race Saturday in a statement released Monday. Stewart struck and killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race on Saturday night in upstateNew York. Ward was struck after he climbed out of his car and was on the dirt track. The authorities inNew Yorksay there are no charges pending against anyone in the death.
College Hockey
The Universityof Michiganand MichiganStateUniversitywill face off outdoors for the fourth time as they meet in the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field in Chicagoearly next year. Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio will also take the ice in Chicagoon February 7th.
Lions
The Lions head to the west coast to play the Oakland Raiders this Friday night.
