Tigers

The Tigers started a 4-game series in Chicago with a 6-5 loss.   Miguel Cabrera was in the lineup, but playing DH after a strained hamstring.  He hit a home run.  Tiger’s rookie shortstop Eugenio Suarez tied the game with a long-ball. But the Sox pulled ahead again with three more off Rick Porcello, including Jose Abreu’s 18th homer of the season.  The Tigers closed the gap on a Victor Martinez home run and then the Tigers almost pulled it out in the 9th, but fell one run short. The Tigers lead over Cleveland is now just 2 games in the Central Division.   The Tribe was 10 ½ out of first just a couple of weeks ago.  The Royals and White Sox are 3 ½ out.  Rick Porcello went five innings, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits. Justin Verlander pitches tonight in Chicago against the White Sox, in game 2. Broadcast time is 7:45 on WBCK-FM.

Bombers

A pitchers’ duel last night at C. O. Brown Stadium as the Bombers lose to the Madison Mallards 1-0.   Battle Creek starting pitcher Kyle Slack didn't allow an earned run, but that didn't stop the Madison Mallards from coming away with a victory.  The Northwoods League South Division-leading Mallards scored on a throwing error in the second inning.  The Bombers stay home to host the Rochester Honkers for the first of a two-game series.

NHL Playoffs

The Kings are a game away from winning the Stanley Cup after a 3-0 win last night in New York against the Rangers.  The two teams play again Wednesday in New York.  Goalie Jonathon Quick turned away all 32 shots by the Rangers.

NBA Playoffs

The Heat and the Spurs 98are tied up at a game eachGame three is tonight in Miami.  Miami will also host Game Four on Thursday before the series heads back to San Antonio for Game Five on Sunday.     Dwyane Wade got away with a ridiculous flop in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.  But only until the game was over.  Yesterday the league fined him $5,000 for it.

Michigan Open Golf

Former Lakeview High stars Jared Multer and Matt Thompson are 6 shots off the lead after one round of the 97th Michigan PGA Michigan Open Golf Championship at Prestwick Village Golf and Country Club in Highland Township.

Multer and Thompson shot 1-under par 71s.  Other locals in the Open include Lakeview’s Landon Osborne was at even-par 72 and Matt Garland was at 3-over 75.  1996 Pennfield High grad and Michigan Golf Hall of Famer Randy Erskine shot a 77.

High School Baseball

Harper Creek and Gull Lake play in today’s state quarterfinal at Bailey Park.  The winner will move on to the state semifinals Thursday at MSU.  Lakeview (31-5) plays Saline today at the U of M and Olivet plays Decatur at Hope College.

Girls’ Soccer

Gull Lake’s girls’ soccer team plays Grand Rapids Christian tomorrow in a State semi-final at East Kentwood. If Gull Lake wins, they’ll play for back-to-back state crowns next Saturday, at Williamston High.

MSU gets Transfer Student

Eron Harris is transferring to Michigan State from West Virginia.  His father, Eric Harris, said Monday that offers were turned down from Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue and UCLA in part because of coach Tom Izzo’s recruiting pitch.  Harris, a guard, was the Mountaineers’ second-leading scorer at 17.2 points per game last season

 Battle Creek Coyotes Home Saturday

The Battle Creek Coyotes host the Miami County Blitz this Saturday at Harper Creek High School   Proceeds will go to help Dale Turpin, as the Coyotes continue their long-time mission to help out local individuals and families battling cancer.
