Tigers 

The Detroit Tigers were shut out by the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in the first of a three game set at Comerica Park last night.  Kyle Lobstein was tagged with the loss, giving up seven hits, including a two-run homer in the second, while striking out five in seven innings.  Chris Bassitt pitched into the eighth inning for his first major league win.  Detroit was held to six hits during the game and left six in scoring position on the bases.

The Royals beat Cleveland, but lost in the continuation of a suspended game, so the Tigers’ lead is now one game in the Central Division.   The Athletics and Royals are the leaders for the two wild-card spots, and the Mariners now are two games out of playoff contention.   The Tigers have six games left, all at home.   David Price pitches for the Tigers tonight against the White Sox.   Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.

Detroit will also play four against the Twins this week, while KC is on the road against the Indians and White Sox this week.

Tiger Injuries

Catcher Alex Avila was behind the plate last night after missing more than a week with a concussion.

Pitcher Anibal Sanchez will return from the disabled list today, but will not be put into Detroit's rotation and will instead be added to the Tigers bullpen. Sanchez had been on the DL since early August with a pectoral muscle strain.

Red Wings

The Red Wings opened preseason play with a 2-1 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh last night. Tomas Tatar scored a power play goal in the first period.  Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist but did not finish the game. A Red Wings spokesman said Datsyuk had a shoulder injury and will be re-evaluated today. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 26 shots in the first two periods, while backup goalie Petr Mrazek stopped all ten shots he faced in the third.

Detroit skates in Chicago tonight before hosting the Blackhawks on Thursday in the exhibition home opener.  The regular season begins October 9th, after the 9-game exhibition season.

Lions Lose Tulloch for the Season

The Lions’ have lost linebacker Stephen Tulloch for the season.  Tulloch tore an ACL while celebrating a sack of Packer Quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Sunday.  Tulloch has never missed a game in his 9 year career.   Coach Jim Caldwell defended Tulloch, saying “There’s got to be some enthusiasm in the game.  That’s why these guys play, and why we coach it because you got passion for it.  That was a big moment.  Things happen. “The team is signing linebacker Josh Bynes off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.   Bynes, an undrafted rookie out of Auburn in 2011, has been with the Ravens organization the past three years, starting 9 games.

Lions Sign New Kicker

Detroit will have a new kicker this Sunday, after giving rookie Nate Freese his walking papers.  The team signed free agent kicker Alex Henery, who was released by the Philadelphia Eagles after three seasons.   Henery hit 86 percent of field goal attempts in Philly.   Freese was just 2 for 7 in three games with Detroit, including a miss on Sunday.  The Lions travel to take on the New York Jets on Sunday.

Monday Night Football 

The Bears beat the Jets with 27-19.   Chicago improved to 2-and-1 with both wins on the road. The Jets outgained the Bears 414 to 257 in total yards in the loss, which drops New York to 1-and-2.

Girls’ Golf

At the Marshall Tri-Match, the host Redhawks were first at Marshall CC, followed by Gull Lake and Comstock. Marshall's Sammi Price was individual medalist with a 42.
