The Tigers won their 8th straight, beating the Astros 3-2.  The Tigers got home runs from Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez.  Rick Porcello pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out 5 and giving up two runs. Joba Chamberlain came in to put out the fire in the 7th and then struck out the side in the 8th.   Joe Nathan pitched the 9th for his 7th save. The Tigers go for the sweep of the Astros and for their 9th straight win this afternoon in Detroit.   Drew Smyly pitches for the Tigers.  Broadcast time is 12:40 on WBCK-FM.

NHL Playoffs

The Penguins beat the Rangers 4-2 and are a win away from the Eastern Conference Finals.  They host game 5 tomorrow.  Tonight, Montreal hosts the Boston Bruins, with the Canadiens up 2-1.  The Ducks play at Los Angeles, with the Kings up 2-0.   L-A has won six straight, after losing the first three playoff games.

Griffins In Round Two

The Grand Rapids Griffins begin Round Two play in the Calder Cup Playoffs against the Stars in Texas tonight.

NBA Playoffs

Indiana beat Washington 86-82 to tie the series at a game each.  Oklahoma City beat the LA Clippers 112-101 to go up 1-0.

Olivet Basketball Coach Steps Down

After 14 years as basketball coach at Olivet High School Brian Dartt has stepped down to dedicate more time to family.   Dartt led Olivet to a Class C state championship in boys’ basketball in 2005 with a 28-0 record, winning six district championships and two regional titles

Baseball

Lakeview swept Loy Norrix, 10-0 and 6-3.  Jake Herbers pitched a five-inning perfect game.  Tyler Horan struck out seven to win game 2.

Softball

Lakeview split with Loy Norrix.  Shayna Staring won game 2 with five strikeouts.

Eaton Rapids swept Pennfield.

Gull Lake and Sturgis split two.  Courtney Senkkewitz too the loss in a 1-0 game, striking out nine batters but earned the win in game two, striking out 11.

KCC Softball

The KCC softball lost to Muskegon CC 5-1 in East Lansing in the NJCAA District G Softball Tournament.   It’s a double elimination tournament, and KCC has to win their next game to stay in it.

Boys Golf

Olivet won the KVA tri-meet …. Keagan Carpenter was medalist with a 33.

Girls’ Soccer

Pennfield 4, Olivet 0.  Madison Rench scored all four goals.

Parchment 4, Delton Kellogg 1.

Marshall 2, Lakeview 0.   Sara Townsend and Anyah Preston scored for the Redhawks and Kelsey Postema had two saves for the shutout.

Lions                                                                               

The first round of the NFL draft will take place in New York tonight.  The Detroit Lions pick 10th overall in the first round. Detroit would have to trade up to get top receivers Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans.  Tonight, the Lions could draft defensive tackle Aaron Donald out of Pitt, Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix from Alabama or Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard. The NFL Draft runs through Saturday.

Battle Creek Coyotes Start Saturday

The Battle Creek Coyotes, Battle Creek’s minor league football team will host the Lake Michigan Havoc in a preseason game Saturday. Kickoff is 6:30pm at Harper Creek High School. To welcome fans to Coyote Football, the team is offering free admission, however donations are encouraged.  Event Coordinator Kurtis Ploehn says that the team name has changed, but the mission is the same.  For the past 6 years, the football team plays to raise awareness and funds in the battle against cancer.  You can find more details at www.battlecreekcoyotes.com or like them on Facebook.

Mrs. Sterling wants to Keep Clippers

Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling confirmed Wednesday that she intends to keep ownership of the team in her family, despite the NBA's move to oust her estranged husband.  Shelly Sterling has been a co-owner of the Clippers with her husband since 1981.

Team USA Plays Friday

In Hockey….team USA plays Germany 3-1 at the World Championships in Minsk on Friday.
