Tigers

The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 last night at Comerica Park on a walk-off hit by Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers staked starter David Price to a 3-run lead in the 7th on a Torii Hunter double.  Price took a 3-hitter into the 9th but had his complete game bid denied when he allowed three runs. Joe Nathan got the win after getting the final out in the frame. Miguel Cabrera went two-for-five at the plate, including the walk-off single that scored Ian Kinsler with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  The win keeps Detroit one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for top spot in the Central Division.  In this afternoon's series finale, the Tigers send Justin Verlander to the hill while Chicago counters with Chris Sale. Broadcast time is 12:40 on WBCK.

Baseball Standings

In the wild card race, the Mariners now are three games out of it. The Tigers, Oakland and Kansas City are a good bet to make the playoffs.  The Orioles and Angels are in.  In the National League, Pittsburgh clinched a wild-card spot.  The Giants should get the last wild-card, as the Brewers are on the brink of elimination.  The Cardinals, Dodgers and Nationals are all in.

Kicker Bironas Death

The story behind the deadly crash involving former Titans kicker Rod Bironas continues to evolve.  A Belmont University student tells "The Tennessean" that Bironas threatened to kill the four passengers in his vehicle and attempted to sideswipe their truck during a confrontation. Connor Fraley said his car was behind Bironas when they smelled something burning from his vehicle.  Fraley told Bironas of the smell while driving and the kicker responded with a threat, saying he was going to kill everybody in the car. The Belmont student said Bironas kept pace with them afterward and tried to hit the side of his truck. Fraley said they were driving at about 110 miles-per-hour when they got away. The incident is said to have occurred before Bironas tried to run a couple off the road later that night. Nashville police say Bironas died in a single-car accident near his home on Saturday night. Bironas lost control of his SUV on a curve and crashed less than a mile from home and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
