Tigers

The Tigers lose 8-2 in Chicago.  The Sox Jose Area started the scoring against Justin Verlander early with his 19th home run.  But a 6-run sixth was Verlander undoing.   Chicago's John Dansk went seven innings and gave up just the two runs.  Detroit has lost eight of their last 10 to fall to 33-and-28. They lead the Sox by two-games in the A-L Central.  Max Scherzer pitches for Detroit tonight against the Sox ace Chris Sale.  Broadcast time is 7:45 on WBCK-FM.

Bombers

The Bombers the Rochester Honkers 5-1 to sweep the two-game series.  Dakota Mekkes struck out nine Honkers and gave up just one run in 5 innings of work.  Bombers pitchers have thrown 27 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The game was stopped twice because of rain---a combined delay of nearly 3 hours. Battle Creek is on the road in Lacrosse tonight.

NHL Playoffs

The New York Rangers hang on with a 2-1 win on home ice against Los Angeles Kings.   The Kings still lead the series, 3-1. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 40 shots for the win.  Benoit Pouliot and Martin St. Louis each scored for New York.   Dustin Brown had the only goal for the Kings. The series shifts back to L.A. for game five on Friday.

Girls’ Soccer

Gull Lake’s girls’ soccer team beat Grand Rapids Christian 1-0 in a State semi-final at East Kentwood. Hannah Phommavongsa scored the game’s only goal with 3:47 left in regulation. Gull Lake senior goalkeeper Maggie Harma had the shutout.  It was her 52nd career shutout, putting her in a tie for ninth in state history. Gull Lake now goes for a second straight state championship on Saturday, at 3pm at Williamston High. It’ll be a rematch with top-ranked Bloomfield Hills Marian.

High School Baseball

Gull Lake takes on Mt. Pleasant at 2:30pm today in the baseball state quarterfinal at Michigan State University.

Lakeview plays Gross Pointe South this morning at 11:30 at MSU.

NBA Playoffs

The Miami Heat will host the Spurs in Game Four on tonight before the series heads back to San Antonio for Game Five on Sunday.

Michigan Open Golf

Ryan Brehm is running away at a record pace in the 97th Michigan Open.  He’s 21 under par after three days, and is 7 strokes ahead of the rest of the golfers.   The final round is today at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland Township, with $57,000 at stake.   Two former Lakeview standouts are in the top third.    Marshall’s Matt Thompson, is at 3 under, and tied for 19th.   Landon Osborne is one under and tied for 26th place.

The 114th U.S. Open Championship gets underway today at Pinehurst number-two in North Carolina.

Red Wings Rookie Awarded

The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association has named defenseman Danny DeKeyser the 2013-14 Red Wings Rookie of the Year.

DeKeyser appeared in 65 games last year and had 23 points, a plus-10 rating and 30 penalty minutes.  Before the 24-year-old Macomb native signed with Detroit in March of 2013 he played three seasons with Western Michigan University.  Previous recipients of the Red Wings Rookie of the Year award include Marcel Dionne, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.

World Cup Soccer

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil kicks off today with a match between the host nation and Croatia. The U.S. Men's National Team will face Ghana in its opening match on June 16th.

The Sprint Cup heads to Michigan International Speedway for Sunday's Quicken Loans 400.

Battle Creek Coyotes Home Saturday

The Battle Creek Coyotes host the Miami County Blitz this Saturday at Harper Creek High School   Proceeds will go to help Dale Turpin, as the Coyotes continue their long-time mission to help out local individuals and families battling cancer.
