Sports Roundup: Wings honor Lidstrom
The Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime. The Wings scored first on a goal by Nikolas Kronwall. Detroit went ahead 2-1 on a Tomas Jurco goal, but again lost the lead late in the game. With just a half-minute left in OT Andre Benoit found the net to give the Avs the win. Jimmy Howard had 22 saves in defeat. The Wings are back in action tonight when they host the New Jersey Devils.
Lidstrom Honored by Red Wings
The team retired former captain Nikolas Lidstrom's #5 jersey in a ceremony before the game. Lidstrom played his entire 20-year NHL career with Detroit and helped the Wings win four Stanley Cup championships. He was a seven time winner of the Norris Trophy for the league's top defenseman. Lidstrom’s jersey is the seventh to be raised to the rafters by the Wings.
Michigan State pulled away in the second half to beat Iowa 86-76 at the Breslin Center last night. Travis Trice led the Spartans with 17 points, Adreian Payne had 14, Denzel Valentine added 13 and Keith Appling and Gary Harris netted 12 points apiece in the triumph. It was the final home game for the Spartans and the final game for Keith Appling and Adreian Payne. MSU wraps up the regular season against Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday. Michigan wraps up the regular season Saturday hosting Indiana.
Women’s Big Ten
Michigan’s women’s basketball team beat Indiana, 82-57 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament. Cyesha Goree scored 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds. The Wolverines will face Michigan State in the quarterfinals today.
In the MAC….
CMU hosts WMU tonight. The Broncos have won 9 out of their last 10 and are tied for first with Toledo in the MAC West.
Girls Basketball – Regionals
Athens 38, Wyoming Potter's House Christian 20. Allison Fuller scored 20 points. Audrey Oswalt had 7 points and 20 rebounds. Athens plays Lansing Christian in State Quarterfinals at Harper Creek on Tuesday.

The Pistons are 13 games under .500 and three and a half games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They travel to Minnesota tonight.
Justin Verlander's first appearance in spring training will be delayed a bit longer, as heavy rain cancelled yesterday's Tigers game against the Phillies at Joker Marchant Stadium. Verlander did throw a side session and his next scheduled start is Thursday against the Blue Jays. Detroit is scheduled to visit the New York Yankees in Tampa tonight.
Lakeview divers Jake Budd and Austin Nemire will go tot the Division 2 state finals starting today at EMU. Lakeview junior John Vann will defend state title in the 100-yard butterfly. Marshall’s Henry Swett and Kyle Weck advance to the Division 3 state at Holland.
