Boston Marathon

Police have a man in custody in connection with one of two unattended backpacks left at the finish line of the Boston Marathon Tuesday. A bomb squad was called in to examine the backpacks and police intentionally detonated them.  Police say 25-year-old Kevin Edson was taken into custody and is charged with possession of a hoax device. Edson also faces charges of disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct.  Witnesses say a barefoot man wearing a long black veil was seen carrying a backpack in the area and was yelling "Boston Strong."  Authorities say the backpack he dropped at the scene contained a rice cooker filled with confetti.  The other backpack was left behind by a media outlet covering the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.   Tuesday marked the anniversary of the marathon bombings last year. That attack killed three people and injured more than 250.

Tigers

The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians will take the field tonight after wintry weather postponed yesterday's series opener.  Anibal Sanchez, who was scheduled to get the start yesterday, will be on the hill tonight and Justin Verlander will get the nod for tomorrow's series finale.  A makeup date for yesterday's game has not yet been announced.

Broadcast time with the Indians is 6:40 on 95.3 WBCK-FM.

Jackie Robinson Day

The game with the Cubs at the Yankees was also postponed, as baseball was set to

honor the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson.

Red Wings

The puck drops on the Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight with three games on the schedule.

The Detroit Red Wings will be back on the ice Friday in Boston against the Bruins. Captain Henrik Zetterberg has skated three times since back surgery in February, but opted to skip the planned practice yesterday with the Wings.   He’ll try again tomorrow, but says he wouldn’t be ready until round two of the playoffs, if the team gets that far.

The Bruins are the top team in the NHL this season. Detroit at Boston…this Friday.

Pistons

The Detroit Pistons wrap up the season on the road against the Thunder in Oklahoma City tonight.  The Pistons will try to avoid ending on a 4-game losing streak.   The Pistons will miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year and will be retooling in the offseason, as the team begins a search for a new president after Joe Dumars stepped down from the position earlier this week.

The Pistons say they’ll run an N-B-A Development League team that will be based in Grand Rapids.  The still-unnamed team will begin play in the fall and its home games will be played The DeltaPlex Arena in Walker, a suburb of Grand Rapids.

Currently, 15 of the 18 D-League teams have single-franchise affiliations with NBA parents. More than 30 percent of current NBA players, including three Pistons, have D-League experience. The Grand Rapids team will play a 50-game schedule that starts in November and runs into April.

Softball

The Harper Creek softball team split a doubleheader with Jackson Northwest.   Taylor Shellenberger had 10 strikeouts as the Beavers won game 1 by a score of 6-4.
