World Series 

A solid bullpen and strong defense have the Royals within two victories of a World Series championship. Kelvin Herrera, Brandon Finnegan, Wade Davis and Greg Holland combined to throw four no-hit innings of relief, as Kansas Citye dged the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the Fall Classic Friday.

Run- scoring hits from Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer in the sixth inning provided the visitors with a 3-0 lead, and the Royals held on after the Giants broke through with two runs against Jeremy Guthrie in the home sixth.

Hollandclosed the door by retiring the side in order to giveKansas Citya 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.  It was Holland's seventh save of this year's playoffs, tying a single-season mark that is shared 5 others.

Game 4 is Saturday, again at AT&T Park. Jason Vargas starts for the Royals, and Ryan Vogelsong toes the rubber for the Giants.

College Football

It’s Michigan at Michigan State today. .   It’ll be the 107th meeting between the two rivals, playing for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The eighth-ranked Spartans head into the game with a record of 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.  Broadcast time is  2pm on WBCK and 2:30 on Mix 104.9.

The WMU Broncos host Ohio U. today at 2pm.   It’s homecoming at WMU, with an early morning 5K race to kick things off, and a Bronco hockey game againstAlaskatonight.

Boston U beat Michigan State in hockey, 1-0.

Lions

The Detroit Lions play the Atlanta Falcons Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.  Calvin Johnson's status for Sunday's game in London remains up in the air as the star Detroit Lions wide receiver continues to battle a high ankle sprain.  The Lions listed Johnson as questionable on Friday's injury report and view him as a game-time decision.   We’ll join the game in progress at 11am Sunday on WBCK.

 Tiger Gold Gloves

Three Tigers have been named finalists for the Gold Glove Award. Catcher Alex Avila, first baseman Miguel Cabrera and second baseman Ian Kinsler have been nominated for the award, which hasn't been won by a player fromDetroitsince Placido Polanco in 2009. The winners will be announced November 4th.

Cabrera Has Surgery

Miguel Cabrera underwent successful right ankle surgery to remove bone spurs and to repair a stress fracture to his navicular bone Wednesday afternoon.  GM Dave said the team did not know Cabrera had a stress fracture heading into the surgery and that it’ll keep Cabrera off his feet all during the off season.   He’ll be re-evaluated in three months, and it’s possible that Cabrera might not be ready for the start of spring training a month later.

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons closed out the pre-season at 5-2 and open the regular season next Wednesday inDenver.

The Lakeview Spartans sprinted out to a 30-point lead in the first half and didn’t look back in a 51-0 road victory over the Gull Lake Blue Devils. The back-to-back Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference East Division champs will head to the postseason at 7-1.

Serena Williams is in the final of the WTA Finals after beating Caroline Wozniacki in a third-set tiebreaker on Saturdayto remain on course for a third-straight title in the season-ending championships.  Williams' opponent in Sunday's final will be the winner of the late match Saturday between Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska.
