September Call-Ups Soon

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he is sure Toledo Mud Hens infielder Mike Hessman will be discussed when the team talks about September call ups.  The 37-year-old holds the Minor League record for career home runs with 433 and may retire after 19 years in professional ball after this season. To join the team next month, Detroit would have to add Hessman to the 40-man roster. Hessman has played over two-thousand games in the minors and has also appeared in over one hundred Major League games with the Braves, Tigers and Mets.

Tigers’ third-string catcher Bryan Holaday was a shoo-in to be called up to Detroit when the team's roster expanded in September. Not anymore.  Holaday is expected to miss the rest of the season after he reportedly injured his left thumb in a collision at home plate Monday night at Triple-A Toledo. Holaday suffered an apparent thumb injury in the 10th inning when he attempted to tag out Gwinnett's Mallex Smith, who knocked the ball loose and scored the go-ahead run. Holaday got to his feet and immediately headed to the dugout.

Lions

The Detroit Lions took training camp practice on the road for the second time as they worked out at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn last night in front of their invited guests. About 11-hundred police, firefighters and emergency medical workers along with their families were in the stands for the drills.  Earlier this month, the Lions held a practice that was open to the public at Novi High School. Detroit will play its second preseason game Thursday in Washington.

MSU Football

Mark Dantonio closed Michigan State practice on Monday, but the Spartans head coach had nothing but good things to say after the team's 11th workout of fall camp.

"I feel good about our football team. We lost Ed Davis, but at the same time injuries are at a minimum,' Dantonio said, putting a wrap on Saturday's scrimmage. Dantonio said junior cornerback Darian Hicks, who has been sidelined since the start of fall camp with mono, could be cleared to return to drills on Tuesday. Tailback Delton Williams had his first day in "shells," donning his shoulder pads and helmet for the first time since returning from a five-month suspension.

Division 2 Poll

Ferris State and Grand Valley State are both ranked in the top-25 Division-two college football poll released on Monday. Ferris State is ranked sixth in the poll, and Grand Valley is ranked at number-24.

College Players Lose Unionization Suit

The National Labor Relations Board is denying Northwestern University football players' request to unionize. The NLRB says unionization could throw off the "competitive balance" between college teams. The losing side does not have an option to appeal. Northwestern players believe they are school employees, and are entitled to form a union. The players were appealing last year's ruling by a Chicago Labor Relations Board.
