The Tigers beat the Red Sox in Boston 4-2.  Justin Verlander started and got the win for the Tigers. Verlander went 6 innings, giving up just one run.  Shane Greene, Justin Wilson and Francisco Rodriguez held the Sox to a single run over the final three, with K-Rod getting his 28th save. The Tigers scored two in the 6th to put the Tigers up 2-1, and put Verlander in line for his 10th win of the season. Former Red Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias did the damage with a two run homer.  Detroit added single runs in the 7th and 8th on RBI singles by James McCann and Victor Martinez.   The Indians were off, so the Tigers are 5 ½ behind in the Central Division.   The Tigers send Mike Pelfrey to the mound in Boston tonight.   Broadcast time is 6:45 on WBCK.

The Baltimore Orioles picked up their fifth consecutive win and stretched their lead in the AL East to 2 ½ games over Boston, with Toronto three games back.

Wednesday is a day game with Michael Fulmer pitching.  Thursday is an off day. The Tigers host the Astros this weekend.

MLB Notes

Anibal Sanchez will get at least one more start, as Jordan Zimmerman and Daniel Norris will each make one more rehab start in the minors.

Former Tiger Prince Fielder will undergo season-ending neck surgery….for the second time in three years.

The Cubs have landed fire-balling left hander Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees. Chicago sent  four players to New York in the deal. Chapman is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings this season.

Bombers

The Battle Creek Bombers were off Monday.  They’re in Wisconsin Rapids to take on the first-place Rafters for a two-game set, starting tonight at 8:05.

Jennings Retires

Wide receiver Greg Jennings is retiring after 10 NFL seasons, saying on social media that "football is over. I'm done." The 32-year-old WMU grad ends his career with 571 catches for 8,291 yards and 64 touchdowns.

Pistons sign U of D Star

The Detroit Pistons have agreed to a one-year contract with guard Ray McCallum.  McCallum played college basketball at Detroit, averaging 18.7 points during his final season there in 2012-13. McCallum's deal is for the league minimum, which is about $1 million for a player with his service time.  The 25-year-old McCallum should add depth to Detroit's backcourt. The Pistons signed Ish Smith this offseason to back up point guard Reggie Jackson.

Olympics

Brazilian police say they have arrested the last suspect who was sought in the case of a group that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State on social media and shared ideas about attacking the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Police say the suspect was taken to a federal prison but revealed no further details, citing security reasons.  The plot was announced by authorities on Thursday when 10 Brazilians were arrested in different states of Brazil. Another man turned himself in on Friday.

OLYMPICS-DOPING

Swimming's global governing body says it will retest doping samples from all Russians who competed at last year's world aquatics championships in Russia. The decision by FINA  comes after the International Olympic Committee failed to support the findings of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which recommended the banning of Russian athletes from the Rio Games.

The decision by the IOC was a blow to the World Anti-Doping Agency as well as all anti-doping agencies worldwide.

Manning Cleared

Retired Denver Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning has been exonerated. Following a 7-month investigation, the NFL says it found no credible evidence that Peyton Manning was provided with human growth hormone or other prohibited substances as alleged in a documentary by Al-Jazeera last year.
