Tigers

The Tigers are AL Central champions for the fourth straight year after a 3-0 win over the Twins at Comerica Park.   Ian Kinsler was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI.  Torii Hunter added a sac-fly in the win. David Price tossed seven-and-a-third scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to move to 15-and-12 and leads the League in strikeouts. Joe Nathan notched his 35th save.  Detroit finishes the season 90-and-72 and will face the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS, which begins on Thursday.

MLB Playoffs

The American League Wild Card Game takes place today with the Kansas City Royals hosting the Oakland Athletics at Kauffman Stadium.  It's the first postseason appearance for KC in 29 years.  The winner will advance to face the Angels starting Thursday.

In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates host the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card Game on Wednesday. The winner advances to face the NL East champion Washington Nationals on Friday.  The Dodgers host the Cardinals on Friday.

Jordan Zimmermann tossed the first no-hitter in Washington Nationals history. Zimmermann allowed only two base runners and finished with 10 strikeouts, but the no-hitter hung in the balance until defensive replacement Steven Souza Jr. made a diving catch in left field for the final out.

Lions

The Lions held on for a 24-17 win over the Jets in New York.  Matthew Stafford threw for 293 yards with a pair of touchdowns for Detroit. Jeremy Ross and Eric Ebron caught TDs.  Stafford also ran for a score.  Lions’ new kicker Alex Henery connected on his first attempt a 51 yarder to match his career long.  The 3-and-1 Lions will host Buffalo this Sunday.

MNF

The New England Patriots share the "Monday Night Football" spotlight with the Kansas City Chiefs tonight at Arrowhead Stadium.

College Football

The No. 10 Spartans start Big Ten play this Saturday night against the league’s only unbeaten team, Nebraska.  The No. 19 Cornhuskers are 5-0, and 1-0 in conference play.   MSU dropped a notch in the rankings, despite a 56-14 win over Wyoming.   Also this Saturday night, Michigan plays at Rutgers.   Western Michigan is at Toledo, Hope visits Albion, and Olivet is at Adrian.

Harbaugh in the Wolverine Mix?

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is drawing interest from the college ranks.  NFL.com reports if Michigan were to fire Brady Hoke, John, and not his brother Jim, would be a potential replacement in Ann Arbor. John attended high school in Ann Arbor while his younger brother went to Michigan to play football. The Wolverines are off to an underwhelming start this season at 2-and-3 after a 30-14 setback to Minnesota in their Big Ten opener.

Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in preseason play at Joe Louis Arena. Faceoff is at 7:30 p.m. Detroit is coming off a 3-1 home loss to Boston on Saturday. Landon Ferraro scored shorthanded for the Red Wings to tie the game at one in the second period. Detroit is 2-1-and-1 in exhibition play.

NASCAR

Jeff Gordon drove to victory in the AAA 400 from Dover International Speedway, clinching his spot in the Contender Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.  Brad Keselowski finished second, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth. A.J. Allmendinger, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola were eliminated from contention in the Chase. Keselowski, Logano, Gordon, Kenseth, Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Kasey Kahne are all through to the next round.

Ryder Cup

Europe has captured its third straight Ryder Cup with a 16-and-a-half to 11-and-a-half victory over the United States.  The Europeans grabbed six-and-a-half points from the 12 singles matches on Sunday to clinch the title for the sixth time in seven competitions. The last U.S. win in this event came in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky. Europe has now won eight of the last ten Ryder Cups dating back to 1993, which is the last time the Americans won on European soil.

Jeter’s Final Game

Derek Jeter has ended his major league career by stroking an RBI single before leaving for a pinch-runner in the third inning of the New York Yankees' 9-5 win at Boston. He received a standing ovation and finished with a .310 career batting average.
