Alex Avila had two hits and a home run for the Tigers. Anthony Gose and Ian Kinsler each had two hits. But the Tiger big bats in the middle of the order went 0 for 15.

Starter Shane Greene gave up 5 earned runs for the Tigers and didn’t get out of the 3rd inning. He gave up 5 hits and walked 4.  The bullpen 1-hit the Sox the final 5 1/3, but the damage was done.  The Royals beat Cleveland move ahead in the Central Division.

The Sox broke a 5 game losing streak with the win. Alfredo Simon starts for the Tigers tonight against Chicago ace Chris Sale.  Broadcast time is 7:45 p.m. on WBCK.

 

Ex-Tiger Hurlers Duel

In a battle of ex-Tiger starters, Rick Porcello and Boston beat Drew Smyly and Tampa Bay, 2-0.

 

Tigers Injuries

Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander has undergone a third MRI on his injured right triceps. The test was preformed yesterday to check inflammation around the injury and to help determine if he can resume his throwing program.   Tigers officials announced yesterday reliever Bruce Rondon will rejoin the team in Detroit Friday to continue his rehab. He has been on the disabled list since Opening Day with biceps tendinitis and has been working out in Lakeland, Florida.  Shortstop Jose Iglesias remains day-to-day with groin tightness. He was not in the lineup last night against Chicago.

 

NBA

The Grizzlies cooled off the top-seeded Warriors in a 97-90 win in Game Two of their West semifinal series. The Grizzlies head home with a 1-1 tie in the best-of-seven set.

The Hawks hammered the Wizards, 106-90, in Game Two of their East semifinal matchup in Atlanta.  The Hawks' Kyle Korver was the big surprise, scoring 22 and playing only eight days after facial surgery.  Washington was playing without John Wall.  The series shifts to Washington tied at a game apiece.

 

The playoffs continue with the Cavaliers hosting the Bulls and the Rockets hosting the Clippers tonight.

 

NHL

The Blackhawks  took a commanding 3-0 lead in their West semifinal series with the Wild with a 1-0 win in Minnesota. Chicago will look to complete a four-game sweep in Minnesota on Thursday.

The Flames got back into their West semifinal set with the Ducks with a 4-3 overtime win in Game Three. Calgary scored with 20 seconds left in the third period and netted the game-winner 4:24 into OT.  The Ducks still hold a 2-1 edge heading into Friday's Game Four in Calgary.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue with Tampa Bay hosting Montreal and Washington hosting the New York Rangers tonight.

 

Griffins in Second Round of Cup

The Red Wings AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins begin their second round Calder Cup playoff series against the Rockford Ice Hogs tonight at Van Andel Arena.

The Griffins advanced after coming back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Toronto Marlies in the first round.

 

KCC Softball

The KCC softball team continues postseason today through Friday as they go for  a District I Championship at Abbott Park in East Lansing.  The Bruins will take the field beginning at 4 p.m. today, playing the winner of the Sinclair/Lansing game.

MSU Basketball
Michigan State is in discussions with Florida for a potential home-and-home series.   The series would begin this season in East Lansing and continue in 2016-17 with a game in Gainesville, Florida, according to an ESPN report.

College Football
College football's bowl season is getting bigger. The NCAA certified three new bowl games for the upcoming season according to ESPN. With the addition of the three games, there will be a record total of 42 bowls including the College Football Playoff title game.  The locations for the new games are Tucson, Arizona, Austin, Texas and Orlando, Florida.

 

Athlete of the Week

This week's WBCK/Meijer Athlete of the Week is the reigning Mr. Golf in Michigan.  Lakeview junior Andrew Walker is starting to put together another solid campaign for the Spartans , who are ranked third in Division 1.  Andrew Walker shot an even par 71 at Orchard Lake Golf Club in Birmingham, featuring the top talent in the state.   That follows an even-par 72 in the Gull Lake Tom Collins Tournament April 30th at Bedford Valley and a two-under 69 at Gull Lake View West in the first round of the SMAC Tourney on April 27th.
