Tigers

The Tigers lost to Texas 4-2 Sunday in Detroit.  The Tigers took the early lead on a Miguel Cabrera hit and Jose Iglesias had an RBI single to stake starter Matt Boyd to a 2-0 lead.   But Mitch Moreland doubled in two runs in the sixth inning to put the Rangers ahead for good.  Cole Hamels out-dueled Boyd for his first Texas win as the Rangers took the final three of the four-game series.  The Tigers are 5 games out of the playoffs, with Texas and four other teams all at least 2 ½ games ahead of them.   Detroit is in Cincinnati tonight for one game, a make up game from June.   Buck Farmer gets the start for Detroit.  Broadcast time is 6:45 on WBCK.   The Angels come into Detroit for three on Tuesday.

Tigers Green Diagnosed with Artery Issue in Shoulder

Tigers’ pitcher Shane Greene's season is probably over. Greene has been diagnosed with an artery issue in his right shoulder, which is believed to have caused numbness in his middle finger.

Lions

The Lions will be on the road Friday as they visit the Jaguars in Jacksonville.  Lions tackle LaAdrian Waddle and defensive end Jason Jones have been activated off the physically unable to perform list.   Detroit practiced without a laundry list of players, including: DE Ezekiel Ansah (ankle), TE Eric Ebron (undisclosed), DT Caraun Reid (ankle), RG Larry Warford (ankle), RB Joique Bell (knee/Achilles), DT Haloti Ngata (hamstring), LB Kyle Van Noy (unknown).  Coach Jim Caldwell said after practice that most of the injuries are minor, although he seemed to express some concern about Van Noy.  The Lions are 1-1 in pre-season after losing in Washington on Thursday.   After this Friday at Jacksonville, they host the Buffalo Bills September 3rd to wrap up the preseason.

Packer May Lose Jordy Nelson for Season

It appears Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson may have torn his ACL during Sunday's preseason loss to the Steelers. Green Bay is reportedly awaiting the results of an MRI but Nelson could be out for the season.

Big Ten Football

There are just 10 days until Jim Harbaugh makes his Wolverines coaching debut as Michigan opens the season September 3rd at Utah. Michigan State plays the next night at Western Michigan. Central hosts Oklahoma State on September 3rd and Eastern hosts Old Dominion on September 5th.

Harbaugh’s team held a students-only practice over the weekend.  Cell phones were not allowed inside.  Harbaugh briefly addressed the students with two ground rules:  Don't use phones, and make "as much noise as possible."  Roughly 400 students were there.

MSU Football

Michigan State is ranked No. 5 in the Preseason Associated Press Poll, released Sunday. The Spartans appear in the Preseason AP Top 10 for the second-straight year for the first time since 1966-67, and it marks MSU’s highest preseason ranking in the AP Poll since 1967 (No. 3).

Golf

Davis Love the Third won the Wyndham Championship. The 51-year-old Love fired a six-under 64 in Sunday's final round to finish 17-under for his first championship since 2008.  Love beat Jason Gore by one shot.  Tiger Woods finished in a tie for 11th.  Woods needed to win the tournament to get into the FedExCup Playoffs.

Nascar

Joey Logano took the checkered flag at the Irwin Tools Night Race on Saturday. Logano led 176 of the 500 laps en route to his third win of the season. Kevin Harvick finished second. Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top-five.

Coyotes to All Star Game 8/29

Eight Battle Creek Coyotes are headed to the MLFA All Star Game in Marion, Indiana this Saturday.    Lead by Conference MVP, Devington Halliburton, the North Conference All Stars will look to better the All Stars from the MLFA's South Conference in at that will be played just prior to the MLFA Championship.  Battle Creek will also send Jeremy Mack, Travis Shepler, Paul Guthrie Jr., Ben Cavendar, Mike Page, James Snider, and Otis West to represent the Cereal City in the game.

No Standing Room for WMU/MSU Game

There won’t be any standing room tickets for the WMU-MSU game on September 4th.

Citing accessibility issues and safety concerns from the fire marshal, Western Michigan University will not be selling standing room only tickets for the grassy hill areas at Waldo Stadium for the game. WMU still has some tickets available for the game, but they are only available through season ticket packages.
