Tigers

The Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Sunday to earn a split of the four-game series.  Daniel Norris took a three-hitter into the eighth inning in his Detroit debut. The 22 year old Norris was obtained by the Tigers on Thursday in the deal that sent former Cy Young Award winner David Price to Toronto.  Norris allowed one run, four hits and a walk in 7 1-3 innings — the longest outing of his career.  J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer, his 29th of the season.  Jose Iglesias tripled over the head of outfielder Adam Jones to knock in a run.  Ian Kinsler went two for three to raise his average to .297

Today is a day off for the Tigers. Kansas CityandBostoneach come in for three games this week.  Justin Verlander will start against the Royals on Tuesday. Broadcast time is 6:40 on WBCK.

The Royals lead the AL Central by 8 games overMinnesota, and 11 ½ games over the Tigers and White Sox.Detroitis only 3 ½ games back in the race for the final Wild Card spot, but a total of 7 teams are in the hunt for that spot.

Newly acquired shortstop JaCoby Jones broke out with a huge game Sunday in his third game played forErie. He went 3 for 4 with three home runs and five RBIs in a 7-1 win overNew Britain. He was acquired in the Joakim Soria deal from the Pirates.

Bombers

The Battle Creek Bombers closed out the home portion of their season with a 14-9 loss to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.   Dre Gleason went 3 for 4 and homered for the Bombers.

After winning their 6th straight over the rival Kalamazoo Growlers, they lost the final two at C.O. Brown.   The Bombers hit the road for their final 6 games.

City League Baseball

The Detroit Jet Box team will join host team HBC Behnke at the NABF World Series in Battle Creek starting on Wednesday. Detroit won the NABF Regional in Flint.  Some other teams coming include The Englewood New Jersey Athletics, the Lombard Orioles, the Cleveland Black Wolves, the Battistoni Diesel, the St. John's Lefty's from Pittsburgh and theMichigan City Lakers.

Golf

Troy Merritt won the Quicken Loans National on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler.  On a day when no one shot better than 67, tournament host Tiger Woods also provided some excitement, making birdies on five of his first 10 holes to get to 10 under long before the leaders got underway.  But Woods faltered with three back-nine bogeys and shot a 68 to tie for 18th at 8 under.

Top-ranked Inbee Park fired a 7-under 65 in the final round to win the Women's British Open.

Nascar

Matt Kenseth won the Sprint Cup race at Pocono when Kyle Busch ran out of fuel on the final lap in an attempt to earn his fourth straight win.  Brad Keselowski finished second with Jeff Gordon third. Logano was 20th and Busch wound up 21st.

CMU Player Not Charged

Attempted kidnapping and assault charges have been dropped against a formerCentral Michiganfootball player. Twenty-one-year-old Brandon Greer remains jailed on disturbing the peace charges. Greer was arrested earlier this month after a woman told police a man tried to kidnap her as she walked her dog.

Lions

Training camp is officially open for the Lions at theirAllen Parkfacility. The first practice gets rolling tomorrow morning. The preseason opens next Thursday, August 13th at Ford Field when the New York Jets come to town.   The Lions are trading cornerback Mohammed Seisay to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2016 sixth-round pick pending a physical. Seisay was signed byDetroitas an undrafted free agent out ofNebraskain 2014. He appeared in 13 games forDetroit, posting five tackles.

Rousey Wins

UFC Women's bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey retained her title during the August 1st, bout against a smack talking Bethe Coreia of Brazil.  Rousey exploded inside the 'octagon' to knock out challenger Correia in 34 seconds.   Rousey is 12-0-0 in her u-f-c career and has dominated most of her fights... all but three have been decided in under a minute.

Piston Mom Dies

The mother of the Detroit Pistons top draft pick Stanley Johnson has passed away.

Johnson's mother, Karen Taylor, was a professional basketball player herself who played a major role in her son becoming the Pistons first-round pick (eighth overall) in this year's NBA draft.
