Sports: Tigers start final home stand
Tigers
The Tigers were off Thursday and start their final 10-game home stand tonight against the Royals in the first of three. Justin Verlander gets the start for the Detroit while Johnny Cueto goes to the hill for Kansas City. We’ll join the game following High School Football on WBCK. The White Sox and the Twins will visit Comerica Park next week in your final chance to see the Tigers at home in 2015.
Thursday Night Football
The Broncos scored two touchdowns in a nine-second span late in the fourth quarter to pull out an improbable 31-24 win over the Chiefs in Kansas City. Emmanuel Sanders' 19-yard touchdown grab with 36 seconds left tied the game. Bradley Roby returned a Jamaal Charles fumble 21 yards for a score on the next play from scrimmage to give Denver the lead. Peyton Manning threw for 256 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Lions
The Lions continue to get ready for this weekend's match-up against the Vikings in Minnesota. Thursday, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and receiver Golden Tate returned to practice after sitting out with injuries on Wednesday. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was a full participant as he deals with a right arm injury. Linebacker DeAndre Levy, with a hip issue and tight end Brandon Pettigrew, with a hamstring injury did not participate in drills for the second straight day. It’s the Lions at Minnesota this Sunday. Broadcast time is 12 noon on WBCK.
Soccer
The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup champion U.S. national team shut out Haiti 5-0 last night at Ford Field. Carli Lloyd had a hat trick, including one converted penalty kick, while Christan Press and Crystal Dunn also found the back of the net for the U.S.
Over 34-thousand people were in attendance, making it the largest crowd to attend a soccer match in the history of Ford Field.
Red Wings
The Red Wings open training camp today in Traverse City. Thursday, the team took part in their 16th annual training camp golf classic. Today 72 Wings players, prospects and tryouts will be on the ice. They’ll be trying to impress new Head Coach Jeff Blashell.
Monday is the annual Red and White game, with the first preseason game set to take place in Chicago on Tuesday.
Golf
Jordan Spieth had a hole in one for the BMW Cup on the PGA tour. Speith is tied for third at 5 under par, behind American. Daniel Berger, Australian Jason Day.
MSU
The MSU Spartans take on Air Force this Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Broadcast time is 10:30 on WBCK.
Michigan
Michigan is a 34 point favorite as they host UNLV this Saturday. Broadcast time is 11am on Mix 104.9 WBXX.
WMU Football
WMU hosts Murray State on Saturday night, as the Broncos try for their first win, after two losses to start the season.
CMU
CMU heads to Syracuse on Saturday afternoon after getting a win for new Coach John Bonamego.
