The Tigers beat the White Sox 7-4 on a walk-off home run and sweep the three game weekend series at Comerica Park. Justin Verlander started but left the game in the 3rd inning due to tightness in his right groin.  Verlander threw 72 pitches over two-plus innings but limited the Sox to 2 runs on 6 hits, with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.  J.D. Martinez cut the Sox lead in half in the 4th, with a home run to left.  In the 6th, Detroit sent eight men to the plate, and scored three to take a 4-2 lead. After a hit by Justin Upton, John Hicks fouled off a slew of pitches from reliever Chris Beck, and then doubled to left.  After in intentional walk to pinch hitter Victor Martinez, Hicks alertly stole third as the Sox infielders were charging in on a possible bunt play.  With the bunt sign off, Alex Presley singled in Hicks.  The Tigers pushed across another run to lead 4-2.  But Alex Wilson gave up three doubles in the 8th and the Sox would tie the game.  In the bottom of the 9th Justin Upton hit a three home run shot to left for the 7-4 win.

With the win, the Tigers have made it four straight and are .500 for the season.   The Tigers have the day off on Monday. They host the first of three versus the LA Angels, Tuesday night.  Daniel Norris will start for the Tigers.  Broadcast time is 6:45 on 95.3 WBCK.

Bombers

The Battle Creek Bombers beat Rockford 4-3 to sweep the two games there.  The Bombers scored three in the third, but the Rivets tied it in the 6th on an unearned run off eventual game winner Jake Hawken.  Battle Creek made four errors in the game, and Rockford made two.  Battle Creek pushed across the go-ahead run in the 7th for the 4-3 win.  First Baseman J.D. Mundy had three hits for the Bombers.  Battle Creek is 5-1, and tied with Wisconsin Rapids atop the North Division. The Bombers head home to host Green Bay on Monday night.  Tuesday is an 11:05am start, as many local school kids will be getting out of class to go to the game.

NBA Playoffs

Golden State leads Cleveland 2-0 in the best of 7 NBA Finals.  The Warriors remain perfect in the post-season, racking up their 14th win by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, 132-112.  Stephen Curry had a triple double with 33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.  Kevin Durant scored 33. LeBron James had a triple-double with 29 points.  Game 3 is Wednesday  at Cleveland.

Griffins vs. Crunch in AHL Finals

The Grand Rapids Griffins beat the Syracuse Crunch 6-5 in Game 2 of the AHL’s Calder Cup finals in Grand Rapids. Ben Street scored in double overtime Saturday for the win.  The two teams play again on Wednesday in Syracuse, with the Griffins up 2-0.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the eighth straight year, but Venus Williams lost in the fourth round.

Graham Rahal sweeps Detroit Grand Prix

Graham Rahal won both races in the in the Detroit Grand Prix over the weekend.

NASCAR

Jimmie Johnson wins at Dover for the 11th time and moves into a tie for sixth on the career victories list.  Johnson tied Hall of Fame driver Cale Yarborough for sixth on the career wins list with 83.

Golf

Jason Dufner lost a big lead but made a 30-foot par putt on the final hole that wrapped up his victory in the Memorial.  Dufner lost a five-shot lead Saturday and started Sunday four shots off the pace.

Girls Soccer

Marshall plays Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in a regional semifinal Tuesday at Plainwell.

High School Baseball

Harper Creek beat Coldwater, 6-2, in the championship game to take home the Division 2 district title in baseball in action at Coldwater High School on Saturday.  Jeremiah Davis scattered five hits and struck out seven for the win.

Harper Creek advanced to the district final by beating city rival Pennfield in the semifinals, 4-3.

Harper Creek advances to face Edwardsburg in a Division 2 regional at Edwardsburg next Saturday at 12:30pm.

St. Philip will face Hudson in a Division 4 regional at Hudson on Saturday.

Colon plays Concord on Saturday.

Delton Kellogg plays Homer on Saturday.

Softball      

Olivet defeated Pennfield, 7-1, in the championship game of this Division 2 softball district tournament at Coldwater on Saturday. Olivet plays Edwardsburg next Saturday.

Track Stars Win at State

Lakeview senior Maggie Farrell won the 3,200-meter run at the Division 1 state finals with the fastest time for all divisions

St. Philip senior Ava Strenge defended her state title in the 3,200.
